Night Vision

The striper bite has been hot and the kids have been dying to do some fishing in the dark – looks like we’ll be going night fishing on Friday. Added bonus: I’ll have one of Energizer’s new Night Strike flashlights onboard.

Energizer sent me a selection of test lights from this new line,  and I’m pretty darn impressed. They’re built like tanks, and are water and shockproof. Just how water and shockproof are they? To give one a real-world torture-test, I took my favorite (the Swivel Light, which has white, blue, green, red, and UV LED’s with 100 lumens of power mounted on a swiveling lock-in-place head) and gave it the old flusheroo.

Waterproof? I'll find out the hard way.

Yep, turns out the Swivel Light is 100-percent watertight. But then I had to test for toughness. My Chesapeake retriever Coco can destroy just about anything (no toy other then a rawhide has ever lasted long in her jaws) so I figured she’d make an excellent test proceedure. I slathered the Swivel Light in peanut butter, and fed it to her. Unfortunately, she did more licking then crunching. So I tossed it across the room a few times and had her retrieve it. Despite this abuse, the Swivel Light kept shining on like a champ.

Plastic & peanut butter - yummy.

Plastic & peanut butter – yummy.

And I do mean like a champ – this light is bright enough to blind you if you accidentally shine it in your eyes.

There is one big, fat down-side to this awesome flashlight: its price. List is a jaw-dropping $79.99. Ouch. But, as is often the case, you get what you pay for. The Night Strikes come with a lifetime guarantee on workmanship and materials and it’s made to live through some pre

tty tough conditions. If you don’t believe me, just ask Coco.
