So you want to go cruising but don’t have the time? Well, that’s a bit of a twisted concept like wanting meditation on the run for the busy executive. But if you don’t have multiple years to explore entire coastlines at a time, try sporadic cruising at high speeds. What?
Cruising by traveling quickly and then keeping the boat somewhere safe while you return to work and familiy is getting more accessible every day. Smaller coastal boats are faster and more self-contained and will allow you to see more, do more and spend less time getting from points A to B. Introducing the Buzzards Bay 34 powercat that might just be a cruiser’s dream.
Designed for coastal cruising, the 34 PC offers a spacious interior and excellent performance and was designed by Chris White who has been creating cats for almost 30 years. A high speed displacement catamaran hull, the 34 PC features knife-like hulls and a tall tunnel to reduce pounding and provide a soft ride. Its composite construction keeps it light and fast with cruising speeds between 20 and 30 knots and top speed of 35 knots. The design is fairly fuel efficient too and will burn approximately .5 gallons per nautical mile at 19 knots. Range with a pair of 95 gallon tanks is about 300 nautical miles at 25 knots. The standard offering is twin Suzuki 225 4-stroke outboards but diesel stern drives are an option. The outboards will prove to be quieter, require less maintenance over time and leave more room for storage in the machinery space. But with the diesels, you’ll get greater fuel efficiency and a joy stick option for easier docking.
The fully enclosed pilothouse and outboards keep the boat quiet and calm so 20 knots seems like 10. Former sailors, sit up and take note – now you can get there fast but still enjoy the journey in near silence. With a draft of only 18” and no exposed shafting, the 34 PC is perfect for skinny water cruising like the ICW. The 34 PC features a double bottom construction, watertight collision bulkheads and the ability to get you home at 20 knots on only one engine.
The layout and accommodations are a cruising couple’s dream. The pilothouse is a rigid construction with excellent visibility and ventilation with a door aft and a fully opening window forward. Since there are no canvas covers to deal with, clean up means you lock it, hose it off and walk on down the dock. And because the pilothouse locks, there are fewer safety or theft issues and you can leave the boat on its own for extended periods.
On the inside, the galley to port is in a straight line and features a two-burner propane stove, a sink and 4.5 cubic feet in the fridge and 2.5 in the freezer. Across from the galley is an L-shaped settee with a folding leaf table that drops down to make a guest berth. The entire settee is designed to lift, exposing tremendous storage but leaving the cushions attached. Forward of the lounge and galley is the large helm with matching helm and co-pilot chairs that turn to face into the saloon when entertaining.
Down below is the private master stateroom, and there is only one since this is primarily designed as a one couple boat. The queen berth is an island with access all around and unlike on most catamarans, it’s at a regular bed height, not up against the headliner. On port, there is a large head with a separate shower stall and on starboard, there is more room for storage.
The machinery space is accessible via hatches in the cockpit and a genset is optional. The cockpit is quite roomy, measuring 6’ x 11’ and leads out onto a convenient swimstep. The foredeck is solid (no trampoline) and features a Maxwell vertical windlass with a very large, hatch-accessible anchor locker below designed to have chain drop down without binding up.
