Yesterday’s news of the new Kadey-Krogen 52′ — which was made sort of under the public radar — at last month’s Trawler Fest in Fort Lauderdale, reminded me of just one more benefit of these events. If you’ve never been to a Trawler Fest, which are owned and operated by Passagemaker Magazine, and you’re thinking about joining the cruising community, you really need to fix that and get to one.
Trawler Fests are a kind of stand-alone boat show for trawler and cruising enthusiasts. There are several held each year, on both the east and west coasts of the United States. The boat show normally runs from Friday through Sunday, and you can normally see examples from most of the major manufacturers there. Often, the boats are shown by agreement with their current owners and when the owners are around, it’s a fantastic opportunity to get the straight story directly from someone who owns the boat.
Another program run by Passagemaker Magazinethat you should consider is the so-called “Passagemaker University,” which is a series of educational seminars usually held during the two days preceeding a Trawler Fest. The next PMU is scheduled for San Diego, March 3-4, followed by the San Diego Trawler Fest, March 5-7. According to the Trawler Fest website, “The event will take place at the Kona Kai Resort and Marina, located at the tip of Shelter Island, San Diego, where exhibiting companies will set up on resort grounds overlooking cruising powerboats in the first class megayacht marina.”
Just in case you were wondering, I don’t get anything in return from promoting these events; I just think they’re truly valuable experiences for folks already cruising, but especially for those who might be thinking about it. Check the website links above and get to one near you this year.
