Spanish Virgin Islands mapThe U.S. and British Virgin Islands are chock-a-block with crewed yachts for charter. Now comes word from Newport Yacht Management that the 80-foot sailing yacht Eliza is going to cruise farther afield, offering charters in the far less traveled Spanish Virgin Islands.

Eliza will be based in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, which is a one-hour drive from the international airport in San Juan. From Fajardo, your charter itinerary can include the islands of Culebra, Culebrita, and Vieques, each of which are promoted as offering uncrowded beaches and lots of snorkeling.

Interestingly, since Vieques was once used as a U.S. military site for bombing practice, your snorkeling adventures can include underwater rendezvous with long-abandoned ordnance. I’m not sure that’s as appealing as parrotfish and sea fans, but it’s certainly not an experience you can have on charter anywhere else in the world!

Itineraries are scheduled to end in Puerto Rico, where you can spend as few or as many days as you like. There is a casino near the marina as well as access to the island’s historic Old Town, which is now a restored  shopping and dining area.

Eliza‘s weekly base rate in the Spanish Virgin Islands is $17,500, which includes all expenses except marina dockage, communications, liquor beyond the basic ship’s bar, and crew gratuity.

Any reputable charter broker can tell you more or help you book a week onboard. To get an idea of the scenery, check out this video that was shot during a cruise aboard the 50-foot sailing yacht Sophisticated Lady:
