Description/Condition

PRICE REDUCED $186,000!  THIS IS THE BEST BUY FOR A FAST CRUISER ON THE MARKET.  SELLER IS NOW ENJOYING HIS NEW BOAT IN THE CARIBBEAN AND SAYS "BRING OFFERS/TRADES CONSIDERED"

Conceived as the longest, fastest and safest cruising sailboat that a mature couple can comfortably sail and maintain with no additional crew, ELAINIUM has proven her design intentions with a decade of successful cruising from San Francisco to Panama, much of it double-handed.  Her first owner assembled a designer "dream team" of Alan Andrews for a sleek efficient and easily driven hull, and Robert Perry for a user-friendly, luxurious and bright interior and deck layout.  Her sailplan is easily controlled with Liesurefurl boom, electric-powered winches and furling code zero.  Light and responsive, she is the rare cruiser that is as much fun and as easy to day-sail as a dinghy -- her 70-year old owner frequently takes her out for single-handed day-sails in and around San Diego Bay.  Systems and finishes provide a high level of comfort and aesthetics without being complex or difficult to maintain.  Cruiseair air conditioning, Spectra watermaker, Splendide full-sized washer and separate dryer, Northern Lights genset, and Monitor windvane are just a few of the tried and true components wisely selected.   With a spacious interior aptly described as “beyond gorgeous,” ELAINIUM proves that one can have it all: elegance, speed, responsive sailing and ease of maintenance and operation.

From the owner:

ELAINIUM is a remarkable boat, because she is so much a sailing enthusiast's dream-boat, and yet has all the goodies and comfort and beauty and safety to satisfy the spouse (and the secret luxury-lover that actually lurks within most sailors, as well).  But it's the thrill of the helm, how she bends to the wind on a close reach, and how she just jumps up to 10 knots in a moderate breeze that is so exciting.   Every sailor who has ever taken the helm is immediately converted and resists relinquishing when it’s time.  It's that "wow!" factor that sets her apart from other cruising yachts. In fact, my mental test for any boat was: Would this boat be enough fun to sail that I would take her out for a daysail by myself just for the fun of it?  ELAINIUM is a great day-sailor and passagemaker, either singlehanded or with lots of friends and family.

On April Fools day I flew from Seattle to San Diego to photograph and take notes for selling ELAINIUM.   It had been five years since I sea-trialed ELAINIUM ex. ELYSIUM with my client, the current owner.  In late 2006 while searching far and wide for cruising yacht, my client was smitten with this large cruising sled and I was informed by his spouse “don’t try to talk us out of buying this boat,” as I had done with many of the other boats we had examined.  I was initially skeptical about the ability of a mature couple to sail and maintain such a large boat.  After a day aboard sailing and inspecting ELYSIUM my opinion changed.  She was indeed easy to sail.  Light displacement and a well conceived deck layout and sail handling systems made sailing a breeze.  Maintenance is always a concern and great attention was paid by the original owner and project manager to engineer and install very simple and easy to maintain equipment.  What I saw in 2

ACCOMODATIONS:

ELAINIUM’s interior is open, light-filled, elegant, and inviting.  Joinery is of varnished maple with select panels of birdseye, burled, and fiddleback maple woods to create a bright, durable, and comfortable accommodation.   Abundant opening and fixed ports and hatches provide natural light and ventilation.  Caframo cabin fans are fitted in all staterooms and common spaces.   Overhead and task lighting is well placed and effective with light switches thoughtfully located at cabin doors and other logical locations.  The cabin sole is varnished teak and holy.  Overhead panels are white/padded vinyl and easily removed for access to deck hardware or wiring.  Headroom is at least 6’ 5” throughout the interior.  Water and fuel tanks are located below the raised salon sole leaving copious storage below settees, outboard of settees, on open shelves, and in numerous dedicated hanging and shelf lockers.  The heads and showers have Awlgripped white surfaces with maple wood trim to keep them bright and easy to clean.  The head and galley sinks and counters are Corian.  High quality fixtures and fittings are used throughout ELAINIUM.  Her current condition is impressive with no corrosion of internal hardware and fittings.  Her accommodation is clean and odor free.

Primary access to the accommodation is through the forward cockpit companionway.  A polished stainless steel ladder with five maple treads overlaid with Treadmaster non-skid pads descends to the inviting salon.  A second companionway from the aft cockpit provides access to the aft stateroom although it has never been used and is not fitted with a ladder.  A removable ladder is also fitted in the forepeak area to the large deck hatch.  This would enable the forepeak area to be used as a crew cabin should one choose to have hired crew.   The Robert H. Perry designed interior arrangement is practical and elegant.  Starting forward is the forward storage/workshop.  Aft of this utility space is the full beam forward head.  Aft, through another door is the full beam guest stateroom.  Next aft is the “U” shaped galley to starboard with a large pantry locker to port and forward of the aft facing navigation station to port.  Up two short steps is the main salon.  To port of the companionway is a bunk room.  To starboard of the companionway is the aft passageway.  Outboard of the passage is a midships head/shower.  Inboard of the passageway and up high is the electrical switch panel located behind smoked acrylic doors.  The engine space is located below the forward cockpit and is easily accessed from port and starboard through hinged/removable doors in the passageway and bunk room.  Further aft and through a privacy door in the passageway is the full beam master stateroom.  To starboard, forward and ensuite is the master head/shower.  A large stern locker aft of a watertight bulkhead is accessed through a hinged step in the stern.  Storage, genset, and steering systems are located in this space.

Starting forward is the forepeak where a “multifunction” space is finished in painted white surfaces.  All the way forward and through a large ring frame, below the deck accessed furler locker is the anchor chain and sail storage.  Headroom in the forepeak is 6’ 4” above removable fiberglass floorboards painted with contrasting non-skid.  The 24” by 24” deck hatch is fitted with a removable ladder.  Stainless steel tubes are secured below the deck edge to starboard for hanging running rigging and extra lines.  Aft and to starboard are three shelves with fiddles.  To port is a workbench measuring 6’ 7” in long.  Four drawers for tool/parts storage ar

DECK & HULL:

ELAINIUM has an off-white Awlgrip linear polyurethane painted hull with thin blue cove stripe and gold over blue boot stripes.  The bottom is painted with black antifouling.  The bow is slightly raked and a stainless steel double anchor roller protrudes from the stemhead to keep the anchor and chain well clear of the bow.  The reverse transom has a molded in “scoop” with a lower platform measuring 42” long by 48” wide: great for boarding, assembling dive gear, cleaning fish or showering.  Two stainless steel grab rails on the transom quarters provide handhold while boarding from a dinghy at the stern.  A center post, fold-down stainless steel dive/swim ladder is to port on the transom and a Monitor self-steering windvane is on centerline.  There’s ample passage to starboard of the Monitor when docked stern to or boarding from a dinghy.  The cockpit is accessed up two easy steps from the transom and twin/outboard steering wheels make the stern “walk-through.”  A huge full-beam stern storage locker is accessed through a hatch in the transom step.  The propane locker is located beneath the starboard helm seat.  A locker with ample space for outboard gas is beneath the port helm seat.

ELAINIUM was built by Dencho Marine in Southern California for her original owner and named ELYSIUM.  Her hull and deck are hand laid E-glass and balsa coring.  Bulkheads are cored to keep weight down.  The composite spade rudder has an autoclaved carbon fiber rudder post.  A large stainless steel backing plate spreads keel bolt loads evenly to the fiberglass grid flooring system.

The Robert H. Perry-designed deck nicely balances the needs of sail handling and lounging by using a forward and aft cockpit.  The decks are finished in light grey Awlgrip Griptek non-skid and off white glossy painted drain channels and coach roof surfaces.   Thirty two inch high one inch diameter stainless steel stanchions and handrails surround the entire deck from bow to stern. A midlevel wire rope lifeline and lower stainless steel foot rail combine with the solid handrails to provide security far and above the usual stanchions and wire rope lifeline arrangement. After all, this is a cruising vessel and safety of crew is paramount.  The foredeck is flush and wide open with molded in toe rails from the bows to the shroud chainplates.   Aft of the mast a low profile, raised coach roof has fixed and opening ports.  Side decks are wide and uncluttered.   A bifold hatch in the bow accesses a furler locker where anchor gear, the recessed head stay drum, and wash down connection are located.   Next aft, a two foot by two foot Lewmar opening hatch provides additional accesses the forepeak storage/work room/sail storage space.  The forward cockpit’s dodger shelters the primary companionway as well as the settees and cockpit table.  Sailing instruments, stereo, and a large chart plotter are mounted in the forward coaming.   The cockpit settees measure 6’ 3” long by 18” wide and are fitted with blue yacht acrylic cushions.  The seatback/side coamings are comfortably high for back support.  A drop leaf cockpit table with centerline stainless steel frame has two 48” long by 16” wide leafs allowing a crowd to dine in this cockpit.   Nighttime watch standing is very pleasant from this protected cockpit with navigation instruments, stereo, and handheld autopilot remote at hand.

The aft cockpit is the sailing/piloting cockpit.  Twin helms are protected by a blue Sunbrella overhead bimini.  This bimini quickly folds up or deploys when desired.  The steering pedestals provide good visibility to windward or leeward while sailing or motoring.  Each is fitted with a binnacle compa

SAILS & RIGGING:

ELAINIUM  is a joy to sail.  Her 75’ tall rig is conservative yet provides enough horsepower to take advantage of the long, narrow waterline and easily driven hull.  The Liesurefurl in-boom mainsail was fitted in 2007 to make sailing even easier.  Main halyard and boom furling line are led to a powered winch at the base of the mast.  Once the main is set, all sheets are controlled from the aft cockpit where two large electric primary winches handle the loads of such a large boat.  A furling code zero reacher was also purchased in 2007 and spreads ample canvas on her low aspect rig to reach at or near wind speed under ten knots of true wind.  All running rigging is of high strength/low stretch line.  All deck hardware is oversized and of the highest quality.  ELAINIUM is a sailor’s boat capable of fast passages with minimal crew and effort.
