This Bill Tripp designed classic yawl was christened “Wappen vonBremen”, and was built by the famous Joh. De Dood & Sohn boat yard in Bremen, Germany. This beautiful yacht has a history documented in books and folklore alike and was one of several “one designs”, originally built for sailing clubs in Hamburg and Bremen and later used as training vessels for young sailors.  Along with sister ship “Hamburg VII”, she has successfully competed in transatlantic-races, and sailed to the far reaches of the North Pole.

Apollonia offers up to 6 berths in 2 cabins and the main saloon.  Forward are two single berths on each side of the passageway.  Aft of this area is a double berth on the port side with the head on the starboard side.  Aft of this is the main saloon with seats port and starboard which can be used as berths.

Saloon:  A large L-shaped seating area to port offers comfortable seating for 6 adults around a central dining table which has a quarter drop leaf to allow movement around the table.  To starboard is a bench seat.  Attractive cabinetry for storage complements in the seating area.

Galley:  Upstairs to the compact galley which provides ease of meal preparations within an open setting.   To port is a small navigation area combined with the top load refrigerator/freezer.  Refrigeration is powered by a 12V air cooled compressor.   This area is separated from the saloon by a partial bulk head which gives the space a very airy feeling.  To starboard is the single stainless steel sink, a preparation area over cupboards and drawers and a three burner Broadwater propane stove with oven.  The sink is supplied with fresh cold water via a manual foot pump.

External Space:  A companionway from the galley provides access to the main cockpit.  Well protected from the elements with a canvas dodger and high coamings, it provides an excellent entertainment area as well as a crew work area.  A Lewmar 3 speed # 65 and a Parat 2 speed B22  serve as the sheet winches both port and starboard.  Separated from the main cockpit by a bridge deck is the steering cockpit with a large destroyer  type wheel, compass and engine controls and instruments.  All decks are teak.  Two large teak and polycarbonate hatches are on center line forward of the main mast which provide ventilation and light to the spaces below.

All spars are aluminium alloy and painted white.   The mizzen has 2 Parat single speed  halyard winches while the main has 3 Lewmar  (1-two speed real, 2-three speed #45) and 2 Barient (1-two speed #22, 1-two speed #20)  halyard winches.  The main boom has 2 Parat single speed reefing winches.  The head stay is fitted with a Furlex 400 furling system. All standing rigging is 1X19 stainless steel with Stalock mechanical fittings. The running rigging consists mainly of synthetic line with a 7 x 19 wire halyard for the main. The Sail inventory is in fair to good condition with :

Additional Comments

Apollonia was damaged in Hurricane Hugo and acquired by a well known boat builder and professional shipwright, Fred Thomas.   Over the last 15 years, Mr. Thomas carefully restored and upgraded the vessel; much of which was done in Trinidad under the watchful eye of a Lloyds, approved surveyor.  Unfortunately, Mr. Thomas died before completing the vessel’s interior forward, of the Saloon.  Thus, although Apollonia has been sailed extensively throughout the Caribbean, some interior joinery remains to be completed.
