Arran History

"Arran"57ft Black County Narrow Boats Known History

Built 1997 by Black Country Narrow Boats of Waterside Cottage Prestwood Drive Stourton Stourbridge West Midlands DY7 5QT (ceased trading 2004 on death of business owner) by them for Original Owner and only past owner: Mr T Jones of 10 Calow Lane, Hasland, Chesterfield

Supplied to Mr Jones as part fitted sail away with traditional Boatman's Cabin fully fitted, fitted with imported engine by Kingfisher Diesel Engines of Poole, Dorset a traditional Sounding Kingfisher KD26 2 Cylinder Diesel Engine, cabin lined and part fitted. Mr Jones then completed the build over the next 4 years. It had a survey done by Brian G Taylor (Marine Surveyor for re-valuation on completion of the boat while it was lying at Macclesfield Marina in Cheshire on 16 March 2001. Valued 2001 at £53,000 and noted as virtually "as new condition".

Arran continued to be moored by Mr Jones at Macclesfield Marina and was initially used for occasional weekends away. But as Mr Jones became older and more infirm, he used to use the boat as a floating cottage in the Marina, rarely venturing out on the canal. This has resulted in very low engine hours (approximately 300-350 hours) since being fitted. This information was given by the boatyard owners, who had serviced it during the days Arran was moored at the marina.

Russell Chase saw the craft advertised in towpath magazine in May 2012 while it was still moored at Freedom Boats, Macclesfield Canal Centre and after negotiations he purchased the boat on 25th July 2012 from Mr Jones (original purchaser of Arran) via Freedom Boats brokerage.

The boat was craned onto transport and driven down from Macclesfield to Shepperton Marina in early August 2012 where she was pressure washed and 2 x coats of bitumen were applied to her hull. Hull was soundness tested by ultrasound pen and the base plate was found to be 10 - 12mm, the hull sides 6mm, with cabin and roof at 4mm. Stem gear was examined and was in good condition. The hull was found to be in very good condition with no pitting and the 4 anodes already fitted were still in good condition. (The visual Survey was conducted by present owner who  is the Managing Director of Famcombe Boat House).

The boat was then moved to it's home mooring at the owners own boat yard, where it was given a make-over and refit for the intended use by the Chase family.

Below is a list of the work carried out by FBH staff between August 2012 and the present day.
