Description/Condition

The DownEaster 38 American Cruising Classic is said to be built to uncompromising standards and is capable of comfortable and dependable long distance sailing.  This Down East is powered by a Yanmar Diesel 56 HP @ 3800 and is Fresh Water Cooled with enclosed system.  Wheel steering and dodger.

This particular boat is a Distress Sale due to death in the family.  The boat was surveyed in April 2007 at time of purchase.  It was purchased in Florida and sailed here to California where it's new owner lived.  At the time of purchase, according to the survey, there were no structural problems with the boat.

It is stated in that survey of 2007 that the engine was reportedly installed new in 2001 and appeared to have been well maintained and very few hours.  Therefore, the engine is a 2001.

The Down Easter on board safety and dependability are designed and built into every DownEaster with decks that are non-skid silica-sand set in polyurethane adhesive coatings.  Vinyl-covered stainless steel life lines, high bulwarks, and reserve hull buoyancy ensure safety at sea and peace of mind.  The rudder is molded of glass reinforced high density foam over a steel back-bone with a heavy wall stainless steel tubular shaft.  It is designed to float in event of needed repairs at sea.

The main salon has a fold-down dinette table and is flanked by settees on the port and starboard sides.  A double berth is created when the back of the port settee is swung upward. The interior cabinetry and trim is teak.

There are sleeping accommodations for six with the forward double berth, the double and single in salon and a quarter berth aft starboard.  The forward head is accessible from owner's stateroom or from the main salon.  It has a standup shower, stainless steel sink and manual marine head with holding tank.  Sink in vanity with hand pump.

The large L-shaped galley is aft port side and has a newer Force 10 three-burner stove with oven and was installed one-year ago.  A trash bin, cutting board, good counter space, large storage lockers and drawers give the needed space forn provisioning an ocean crossing.  Deep double stainless steel sinks with pressure hot and cold water and hand pump for saltwater rinse.  Top loading large refrigerator/freezer and top loading ice box or dry storage, PUR water maker.

The navigation area is opposite the galley with a chart table and an electronics console and large under-seat stowage area.

Additional Information

The vessel was last surveyed in April of 2007 when purchased in Florida and then sailed to California.  As stated in the survey at that time, when the vessel was hauled for the bottom inspection and the bottom was inspected visually and sounded with a hammer, the following observations were made and stated in survey.

There were no blisters.  There were no indications of delamination.  The propeller shaft and the propeller were in good condition.  The cutlass bearing had approximately 1/16th inch play.  The rudder shaft and bearing were in good condition.  The rudder had some wear at the top where it apparently has some of the fiberglass rubbed off by barnacles.  The bottom paint was in fair condition.

It is noted that the engine, reportedly was installed new in s001, and appeared to have been well maintained and reportedly had few hours.

The surveyor noted that under sail only, with winds of approximately 15 knots and seas approximately 2 to 3 feet with the roller furling genoa and the mainsail up, the vessel reached 6.4 knots.
