Alan Mummery designed Millenium 55 Cruising Yacht.

Alan Mummery’s (designer) comments are as follows

On seeing the drawings of the first yacht under construction in Auckland, the observers first reaction will proberly focus on the configuration –that is a Deck Saloon yacht. Whilst now becoming popular in Europe and North America, the concept has had a following in NZ for many years, and one of the writers earliest commissions, was for a 55 foot Pilothouse, this term used when a second steering station is offered

The form and dimension of the Millennium Deck saloon provide what I consider to be two very important features. Firstly that the eye-line for appropriate viewing, when seated, is comfortably related to the sill height of the side windows, and secondly, that whilst achieving this, the house retains an acceptably low profile and proportion to the vessel overall

The hull size was chosen to provide unforced space for a relatively small number of persons: such as owner and family or two couples and children and for good performance with high safety characteristics, whilst still allowing for the possibility of single-handing

The hull length combined with short overhangs provide for a long waterline (48 ft) with easy lines and run which combined with the low wetted surface to volume of the sections indicate an easily driven hull (since proven by her ability to achieve nine point eight knots under power, when the propeller makers insisted 8.5 would be the top speed)-85 BHP Cummins. The distribution displacement over the long waterline, results in a performance oriented displacement hull length ratio. The longish finn keel is flared in the lower third; lowering the centre of gravity of the ballast the draft is a moderate 6foot nine inches in cruising trim

Millennium Yachts, Description and Specification

The yacht was commissioned with out door activities in mind. The builder had done much cruising in NZ and in the Pacific Islands. He thought there had to be a better way than being confined to a small tunnel, where every time something of interest happened outside, one would have to race up the companionway stairs to check what was going on, and once out there being restricted to a small knee bashing cockpit. He also wanted space for deckchairs and hammocks, so the result was the M55 where the cockpit sits14, with a table and the decks are spacious. Overhead the cockpit, there is a bimini solidly mounted on 32mm ss tube, zippered to the arch, which since launching has had 75 knots of wind over and under it. At the aft end of the cockpit is a fabricated alloy arch, which carries the radar and main traveller. Under the arch is a pair of lights and on the sides a good-sized pair of aqua pro running lights

With diving and swimming in mind, the wide transom has two full width built in steps with lockers in the lower step Access to the water is by a teak tread ladder wit
