Kaleidoscope is a Maine built Gentleman's lobster yacht finished by some of the best custom boat builders in the country.  She is a near perfect cruising yacht priced to sell.  The design is well thought out and executed superbly, and she is finished using the finest equipment and materials available.  Her layout is ideally suited for a couple and can take a family of four.  No detail has been overlooked and she doesn't need a thing, just set a course and go.

Kaleidoscope was built by Maine's finest.  The hull was laid up in Southwest Harbor by Mount Desert Island Boatworks in 1993, and she was finished by Farrin boatworks in Walpole in 1994.  Since 2001 Kaleidoscope has been completely redone from stem to stern with well over $200,000 spent.  Since then she has always been given the finest care and stored indoors in the winter.  A list of all the upgrades is included below.

Kaleidoscope has two helm stations, a Caterpillar diesel, a Vetus bow thruster, an Onan generator, a Vacuflush head and stall shower, Marine Air reverse cycle air conditioning and heat, and all top-of-the-line Simrad electronics.  Kaleidoscope is an amazing value if you are considering a downeast cruising yacht.  The replacement cost would be over $500k today.

Kaleidoscope sleeps two in an ample vee berth in the bright forward owner's cabin.  The berth is covered in luxurious pleated eucalyptus Ultrasuede, and accented by contrasting shams and throw pillows.  The cabin has teak ceilings and a white formica overhead trimmed in teak, a large hanging locker and two large clothes locker, a small drawer for personal articles, a teak book rack, two Cantalupi reading lights, and abundant shelf space.  Opening ports and a large overhead hatch provide plenty of light and ventilation, and there is a varnished teak and holly sole throughout.

Kaleidoscope boasts a large head with a teak and holly sole.  The counter top is Corian in which there is an elegant Scanvik mirror-finish sink with a single lever faucet.  The head is a freshwater Vacuflush.  She has a full stand-up stall shower with a custom Awlgrip and Plexiglass (1/2" thick) folding shower door.  She has shelves and several towel racks, a Corian fiddle behind the sink for toilet kits, a medicine cabinet with a mirror and a large shelved storage space under the vanity. There is a Lewmar opening port and an overhead hatch.

The salon is highlighted by nine large fixed and opening (5 opening) windows providing great light and 360 degree visibility.  There is an L-shaped settee to port, finished in beautifully pleated eucalytus Ultraleather with contrasting custom made throw pillows.  The floor is a teak and holly sole finished in high gloss varnish throughout, and the white formica bulkheads (Herreshoff style) and overhead are all trimmed in varnished teak.  Polished stainless trim is on all floorboard access areas.  There are mini blinds on the salon windows.  There is a fixed table against the starboard bulkhead aft of the helm seat, and a custom salon/cockpit table which stows away when not in use.  A single sliding door on the starboard side opens into the cockpit.  Lighting is provided by 5 Cantalupi reading lights, two overhead lights with both red and white bulbs.  There is also a chart light with a red bulb mounted on an adjustable arm above the chart area.  There is a bronze porthole style mirror, a number of bronze coat hooks, a teak book shelf, a teak binocular and beverage holder, 110 outlet, and a CO2 detector.  There are seven large lockers providing excellent storage space.  A new AM/FM/CD player is attached to an XM radio with speakers mounted in the salon and on the flybridge.

The galley if aft to port of the owner's cabin and opposite the head.  It is open overhead to the main cabin and helm area, which are up three steps.  The galley is L-shaped with Corian counters, and a large stainless Scandvick sink and faucet.  The cooktop is outboard, and is a Kenyon two burner electric/alcohol stove.  A Delonghi microwave/convection oven with a broiler sits atop a hanging locker, and the Norcold Tek II ac/dc frig/freezer is under the cooktop.  There are four drawers, several good storage lockers, ample counter space, a teak and holly sole, teak trim around the white formica, and a Lewmar opening hatch above and an opening port.

Kaleidoscope is built like a battleship.  She boasts a solid fiberglass hull and a very low center of gravity.  Ask to see the cut out of the hull left over from the bow thruster installation.  Like other fine downeasters, Kaleidoscope features a full keel providing excellent propeller protection, an almost plumb bow with a sharp entry, soft chines, tumblehome, and flat sections aft.  These characteristics make Kaleidoscope extremely stable and sure footed in any sea conditions.

The hull is painted in Dark Alden Green Awlgrip with a Gold Awlgrip pin stripe and boot stripe.  The hull was recently refinished in an Awlgrip clearcoat for further protection.  The bottom has been painted with Charcoal Awlgrip bottom paint.  There is a very large rudder providing excellent maneuvering in close quarters and there are spray rails forward.  The propeller shaft has dripless seals and is fitted with Spurs Line Cutters.

Kaleidoscope has a new teak cockpit sole with three hatches to access the lazarette and mechanicals.  There are two long side lockers for storage.  There are hawse pipes on the deck to access well-backed under-deck cleats.  There is a third centerline cleat.  There is a chrome ships bell with a hand knotted lanyard, an 8" stainless opening plate to access the fuel tanks and a salt water wash down.  There are Perko spreader lights on the mast, a Perko spot light, and courtesy lights in the cockpit.

In the lazarette there is a spare Fortress anchor with 10' of rubberized chain and 150' of rode.  There is access to the rudder post and a custom mounted iron emergency tiller.  There is a hull cut-out which can be removed to provide access to the propeller and shaft to enable one to clear snags from the prop and shaft without have to get in the water.  This is a system that has been used on work boats and by lobstermen for many hyears.  The trim tab pump, fresh water pump and a bilge pump are also mounted in the lazarette.  There is a 3' varnished ensign staff, a stainless flush socket, and a 24"X36" ensign.  There is a Toast Sunbrella cockpit cover to protect the cockpit and the teak deck.

Thee are robust Edson Dinghy Davits which hold an 8' Trinka tender.  The Trinka, "Prism," is an excellent rowing tender, but could also be motored with a small outboard or sailed with the optional sailing gear (not included).

The topsides are painted a Stark White Awlgrip and the decks are finished in a non-skid surface of Moondust Awlgrip.  Beautiful varnished teak trim, includidng name boards in gold leaf on each side of the flybridge, and hand rails dress up the exterior.  Kaleidoscope has a new custom molded swim platform which is full beam and quite wide.

Kaleidoscope walkways are proteccted by heavy gauge stainless bow and hand rails.  There is a varnished teak pulpit with an anchor roller.  A 40 lb chrome Delta anchor with 100' of chain and 150' of rode is mounted on the pulpit.  It is attached to an electric Lewmar Ocean Series Windlass, finished in highly polished chrome with up and down foot pedals with covers.  There are two chocks and a large stainless steel bollard mounted on the bow.  There are also two spring cleats, three Lewmar opening hatches, two fuel fills, one water fill and one waste pump-out deck fittings.  Nav lights include Aqua Signal running lights, a mast head light and Ray-line remote spot light.  There are white mesh covers for the windshield and all salon windows.

There is a custom Hinckley style mast mounted on a tabernacle on the aft flybridge deck.  It is painted in Stark White Awlgrip to match the superstructure.  The Simrad Radome, Simrad GPS antenna, Shakespeare VHF antenna, Shakespeare TV antenna, and mast head running light are all mounted on the mast.  The mast also has two spreader lights to provide illumination in the cockpit.  The mast can be lowerred and rested on a stainless steel bar mounted between the dinghy davits for traveling under low bridges.  The current owner has taken her up the Hudson River to Lake Champlain and Canada, and reports the mast tabernacle system works well and is easy to put up and down.  Bridge clearance with the mast up is approximately 20' and with the mast and bimini down it is under 12'.

The Caterpillar 3116 currently has approximately 1700 hours and has been well maintained and always serviced by certified Caterpillar dealers.  She has a Walker Air Sep air filtration system installed by Hinckley, a new turbo installed in 2004, and new intake valves and a custom exhaust manifold installed in 2006.

She has dual Racor 900 Fuel Filters and dripless shaft seals.  There is especially good Sound Down insulation, minimizing cabin noise underway.  The engine room is equipped with a bilge pump, a high water bilge alarm, and lights.

Lower Helm Controls and Electronics

Kaleidoscope is a two station yacht with excellent visibility from the lower helm.  She has a large molded helm seat to starboard finished with eucalyptus green Ultraleather cushions.  There is a large chart plotting area on the dash to the left of the helm station, and a chart light with a red bulb for night vision mounted on an adjustable arm.
