Description/Condition

When asked to give a brief description of his creation, designer Rod Stephens provided the following quote: " An ideal size; the Stevens Custom 42 is easily handled by a single couple, yet it is spacious enough to cruise the whole family in perfect comfort. The galley is well thought out. The engine box provides a perfect countertop for sinks, and its position offers a safeguard for the cook at sea. On deck, there's an ample sail locker below the port side of the cockpit. The area forward of the companionway offers a secure place to stow a ten-foot rigid dinghy and a couple of sailboards."

DAWN is the fifth of five Sparkman and Stephens 42's built by Grand Harbour and imported by Stevens Yachts of Mamaroneck, New York in the mid to late '80's. Her strong, sweeping exterior lines are accentuated by gracefully curved interior wood work that is all original and beautifully maintained.

As if a mere 880 engine hours didn't give the indication that the boat has been lightly used, finding unused shelf fiddles and portlight screens still wrapped in their original packaging and looking like new only reaffirmed our thoughts.

It is a very fast, well-found and stiff bluewater cruiser whose rails have never seen green water. For a complete description and photo essay of the boat, click "Full Specs" above.

Accommodations and Layout
Large v-berth forward with shelf storage, lockers and drawers. A spacious head with shower is next aft to port with hot and cold pressure water. Storage cabinets and a liquor locker are located opposite to starboard. An L-shaped settee is next aft to port with a drop-leaf table (with center storage) and a single settee to starboard that converts for sleeping two. Port and starboard settees are done in burgundy rolled leather. Other interior cushions are finished in impressive burgundy fabric that has the look and feel of crushed velvet. The cabin sole is teak and holly finished to a fine gloss. Aft to port is a well thought out galley with gimbaled four-burner propane stove with oven and rotisserie, top and front loading separate Sea Frost refrigerator and freezer boxes. Double stainless steel sinks are located fore and aft on the centerline over the amidships engine box. An efficient navigator?s station is located to starboard with chart table, electrical panels, and flush-mounted electronics. Additional storage lockers and a double quarterberth further aft round out the interior accommodations which by all accounts is as pleasing and beautifully designed as anyone could wish.
