If you’ve ever cruised the Caribbean – either in a boat or as an armchair sailor using a cruising guide, chances are you have used one of Chris Doyle’s Caribbean Cruising Guides. And if you wondered what type of boat Doyle was sailing when he did all the research for his guides, then your answer lies in this boat. Contigo is a sistership to Doyle’s boat which was called Helios. Doyle moved on to a multi-hull, but he sailed a Whitney Carib 41 through the islands for many years while doing the research for his guides. The Whitney Carib 41 has many fine features, amongst the most prominent of which is the substantial insulation built into the coachroof and deck and some areas of the hull and its spacious center cockpit. The intention was to make the boat “unsinkable” – rather like the Dutch Etap line claims to be. There is even a report of an early factory demo boat from Whitney being intentionally flooded with a bunch of yachting journalists on board, to prove its unsinkability! Contigo is a great boat for someone looking for a lot of boat for not a lot of money. Sure, she’s not the newest and snazziest on the dock, but she’s solid and dependable, with many of the features sought after by those who know what is important in a cruising boat. The wide side decks and spacious safe centre cockpit with high backed seating so you sit down in the boat rather than being perched on top like some centre cockpit boats that are trying to fit a massive condo down below, are just a few features. |

| From the cockpit you have access to the main salon and galley, forward, or the aft cabin. The cabin liner is painted white, which makes the boat light and easy to clean, storage lockers in the galley, salon and head are wooden and many have attractive inlay around the edges. The aft cabin is large and has a large bed port, aft. Forward of the bunk on the port side, is the navigation table with instruments. The nav. station is conveniently located near the steering position, so it is easy to access for the person on watch. Hanging lockers and lots of storage as well as a comfortable chair are on the starboard side. There is ventilation through two opening portlights in the transom, one above the chart table and a hatch, as well as the companionway door. From the forward door of the cockpit you descend into the living area, with the table and settees to port and the galley to starboard. The table can be lowered to form a double bed. The galley has a 3-burner propane stove w/ oven, double sinks and an Adler Barbour refrigerator. There is a spacious head forward of the salon, with shower, basin and huge storage lockers. The v-berth is in the bow. It has lockers on both sides of the cabin, and is separated from the head by wooden doors. |
