1978 james wharram 38' modified motorsailer. Original hulls, which have been from florida to hawaii and back. And are still in excellent condition. the hulls were built out of high quality fir plywood, fir and oak then glassed over. the cross member beams have just been replaced with hand picked pressure treated pine, then decked over with high quality 3/4'' fir ply. both sides were treated with food grade linseed oil. 100 + lbs of fasteners predrilled and screwed. beams are not lashed like most wharrams, but have rubber compression style bolts, way less maintenance and relatively easy to tighten with a nut. the fasteners are part of the original design and most were replaced recently. Front deck has been built out of composite and is ready for trampoline and last board. the boat has a long shaft high thrust yamaha 8 hp. electric start with power trim. motor pushes the boat just fine 5-7 knts and gets about 10-15 mpg. the motor is a little small, but would be a great tender motor. the boat should have a 25 to 40 hp for any serious traveling.    The boat has a large pine structure built on top out of 2x4 and 1/4'' plywood then a layer of peel and stick tar paper.  The structure measures about 14.4' wide x 19.2' long  and 7.5' tall. feels very large and would make a great open layout. have drawing if wanted. There is a large hatch for each hull in the structure with tons of room for tanks, systems, batteries, storage etc.... the structure has sliding doors front and back that recess into the wall.sliders where chosen for a few different reasons, one being that they could easily be removed and stacked for less wind drag. the structure has large openings about 6' long x about 40'' tall, 3 on each side. front and back are the same height but different lengths.  they are designed to be able to open or close.hatches are designed to open down for sea worthiness and less wind drag, but could open up for more shade, rain,dew,etc.. or with the right design could open either way. the large roof has 2 layers of 1/4 ply and well supported for solar and entertaining. The roof is slightly pitched to the stern for rain collection if wanted. eventually the structure should be finished with hatches, tpo roofing and a bamboo reed veneer, or what have you. The structure on the boat is well built , but also could break  away in very large seas while capt. and crew are down below in the hull. Was never intended to be used this way, but you never know. structure can also be easily removed if needed by batt. operated sawzall by cutting around the perimeter near the floor through 1/4'' ply and some 2x4's then by cutting down the center of the roof, then shed one side at a time. in neither case should it affect the forward mast. In the ladder the rear mast could be removed before shedding then could be re installed. the boat comes with a 42lb cast aluminum barnacle anchor and a fortress. comes with extras like tools and materials. the boat currently is drawing less than 2.5' the beam is almost 17' with walk around 2''x12'' planking. the rudders do work but are still original and the hardware should be replaced and rebedded.the boat should be hauled and painted. the back of the boat would be nice with an expanda metal deck that is flush with the rest of the deck. and by flipping the rudder configuration, which would open up the back deck but would add a couple feet to the boat. And even better a remote helm forward in the structure. the boat could be used in many different ways for many different things. Motorsailer, power catamaran, houseboat or all of the above. The last photo is a picture of a similar concept. Its also for sale on boats.com
