Question: The photo shows the LPG (Liquid Propane Gas) locker on my new boat. It is located right in the cockpit and there is just enough space in the locker for me to store some of the cleaning supplies I frequently use on deck. Is there any regulation that says this is a bad thing to do?
Answer: Great question! This is a potentially dangerous thing to do. The ABYC in its A-1 Standard, which covers LPG systems, specifically states that lockers used to store LPG bottles not be used to store any equipment other than the bottles and components such as shut-down solenoids and pressure regulators that make up the LPG system. The reason may not be obvious, but the fear is that the additional equipment could damage the LPG devices causing a leak in the LPG system.
