When you think of fishing in the Pacific Northwest, salmon immediately come to mind. So it might take a moment or two before the thoughts of tuna and crabs turn up. These opportunities and more are available here, especially if you own one of the Duckworth Offshore Series boats. Built in Clarkston, WA, characteristic features of these iconic fishing boats include their aluminum construction and full hardtops with forward leaning windows.
There are four models currently offered—the 24 Offshore, 26, 28 and 30—and to say they are designed for those who take their fishing really, really seriously is almost an understatement. Standard features include a self-draining aft deck, oversized fish box, live/bait well with dual-lid cutting boards and rear-deck transom door. Optional features include the ability to add a davit for easy crabbing, downriggers for deep-water trolling, or outriggers for perfect tuna spreads. Add to this the optional on-board storage for over 24 of your finest rods and you begin to get the idea.
At the Seattle Boat Show I talked with Chad Beatty from Three Rivers Marine, the local Offshore Series dealer, and one of his clients, Bruce Hermanson, who owns a 26 Offshore. Chad says the boats are designed for the hardcore fisherman, the types that go out in most weather conditions and for whom a galley is an option! Bruce says he loves the Duckworth because of its flexible configuration; his has a larger fishing deck and smaller cabin area.
He also points out how safe the boat is for his family, especially his 4 year old son who just loves to fish. Another key attraction for him is that the boat is easily trailerable. So he has a boat that he can take “to where I want to fish rather than being restricted to where it is I live.”
