FOSTER CITY, Calif. — Few get-togethers truly qualify as "don't miss," but with a guest list that reads like a Who's Who in high-performance boating, Skaterfest should be one of those rare gatherings. Put it this way: If I were going to be anywhere near Smitty's Marine in Brick, N.J., on the evening of May 18, I'd already have a ticket.

Among the scheduled "special guests," according to a press release from the New Jersey Performance Powerboat Club, which is hosting Skaterfest, are: Peter Hledin, owner of Douglas Marine/Skater; noted propeller engineer Dennis Cavanaugh of Mercury Racing; Mike D'Anniballe, owner of marine engine giant Sterling Performance; and Pat Patel, world champion offshore racer.

What all these outgoing high-performance luminaries have in common, beyond close involvement with Skater catamarans, is a desire to share knowledge. (I know; I've interviewed all of them more than once for Powerboat magazine in the past eight years, and all are engaging.)

The event, which costs $35 per person, begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. Dinner will be catered and a DJ will provide music.
