The MarineMax inaugural Outboard Series fishing tournaments continue, with one more on the calendar: August 27, in Pensacola, FL. The first three events of the series (held in Destin FL, Panama City FL, and Gulf Shores, AL) were solid successes, and in Panama City alone, 46 boats participated to raise over $5,600 for the Fisher House, a charity that aids American military members in times of need.
Tournament entry fees are $150 per boat, and cash prizes are awarded for first place ($750), second place ($500) and third place ($150) for a variety of both inshore and offshore species. Mahi-mahi, wahoo, king mackerel, amberjack grouper, speckled trout, and redfish all garner cash awards. There’s also a separate kid’s division. The captain’s meeting for the final tournament takes place on August 26th at the Pensacola MarineMax (84 West Airport Blvd.), and weigh-ins will be at Palofax Pier.
Along with MarineMax (a powerhouse in recreational marine sales that recently updated its website) the tournament series has a long list of sponsors that includes some heavy-hitters in the marine world: Boston Whaler, Mako, Simrad, Mercury Marine, and Saltwater Sportsman are on the list, among others. Why organize an outboard-only fishing tournament of this nature in the first place? According to MarineMax president and CEO William McGill, “At MarineMax we share the same passion for family boating and fishing because we’re boaters and fishermen, too. The idea for our MarineMax Outboard series grew from that passion, and the decision to donate the entry fees to Fisher House came from our desire to recognize out military men and women for the sacrifices they continue to make on our behalf.”
