Well, the 2010 Innovation Awards are done! With a total of 51 entries this year, it was a pretty big field. My favorite in the bunch was the FLIR handheld thermal imager, which won in the safety category. Nifty stuff, but we’ve already talked about that. Another award-winner which should interest anglers in a new electric motor from Torqueedo. This three-hp. electric weighs about 30 pounds and has an integrated li-ion battery. The really nifty thing about it is that you can charge it with a solar panel, and get a complete re-charge in 5 hours (or run continually… but slowly, at just 1.5 – 2 knots.) The down-side? The folding solar panel goes for $900. Still, high-rolling reservoir runners and salty trollers will love it.
Another nifty winner was Standard-Horizon’s Matrix AIS VHF. This unit combines a radio and an AIS receiver. The really cool thing is that the unit costs MSRPs at just $399. That’s less then a stand-alone AIS would cost. Sorry I don’t have any pics for y’all yet, but the internet connection here is s-l-o-w and I can’t download ‘em to my computer yet. So… stay tuned! There’s lots more to come, in the next few days!
