BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Falcon Graphite Rods has developed the Falcon Coastal Series, 10 casting and eight spinning rods designed to catch the inshore grand slam of saltwater gamefish — snook, tarpon, redfish and speckled trout — in the sometimes brutal Gulf Coast fishing environment.

The new Coastal Series incorporates design recommendations from top saltwater fishing guides from Florida to Mexico. The Oklahoma company sought the advice of captains on the best tip-and-taper combinations for casting the most productive lures and baits and on the right rod action for landing grand slam trophies.

Constructed from American-made blanks of 100-percent graphite, like all Falcon Graphite rods, the new Coastal Series rods also feature Fuji reel seats and guides with aluminum-oxide inserts. Guides on casting models are double-footed for extra strength.

To resist the corrosive effects of hot, humid saltwater environments, the Fuji guides are made with S-4 stainless steel finished in bright chrome. For added corrosion resistance, Falcon specifies two coats of Flex Coat for each rod. The handles are A-grade Portuguese cork.

The rods range in length from 6 feet 6 inches to 7 feet 6 inches. Suggested retail prices range from $74.99 to $89.99.

"The new Falcon Coastal Series grew out of our research that confirmed what saltwater anglers and guides were telling us," said Chris Beckwith, Falcon's vice president of marketing. "Rods made for freshwater fishing just don't hold up well in saltwater conditions. Sun rays penetrate and weaken unprotected rod blanks. Inferior rods snap under the line-peeling strain of big fish. Fat leader knots tend to pop out guide inserts. For all these reasons, we developed the Falcon Coastal Series."

The new Coastal Series is the fifth series of rods developed by Falcon Graphite Rods to meet the casting and gamefish control needs of various sportfishing specialties. The Falcon Expert Series combines the sensitivity required for freshwater finesse fishing with the strength required to land trophy bass. Other series include the Falcon LowRider, the Falcon Silver Series and the Falcon Cara Series, designed by Mark Davis, two-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year.

"We were the first people to design and build rods for specific fishing techniques and lures, one for casting Carolina rigs, another for pitching, and so forth," Falcon's Beckwith said. "This was the basic design criterion for the Falcon Coastal Series, too, and it has created such Coastal models as the 'Walk the Dog Special' and the 'Bull Red Spin.' But for the Coastal Series we also created a rod that overcomes the tough fishing and environmental conditions that inshore saltwater anglers face day after day."
