Though it took longer—more than a year from design to the completion of hull No. 1—than anyone at Dave’s Custom Boats anticipated, the new DCB M41 Widebody catamaran appears to be worth the wait. During its first test session in late December off San Diego, the 41-footer topped 170 mph, with its twin turbocharged 1,350-hp quad overhead cam engines from Mercury Racing turning 6,200 rpm.
Dave Hemmingson, the founder of the El Cajon, Calif., custom catamaran and V-bottom company, called the new model, the largest in the builder’s beamy Widebody catamaran series, “a home run.” He also said he believes that cat has more speed in it. Final dial-in, meaning drive height (X-dimension), drive gear ratios, and propellers, is still underway.
“We ran it up to 170.4 mph with a pair of Mercury Racing 17” x 41” propellers turning in,” said Tony Chiramonte of DCB. “We tried a couple of props, but we were really out there to get a feeling for what the boat can do. There were some 3- to 4-footers and good crosswind in the ocean today, and it handled all of it perfectly."
A stunner from stem to stern, the M41 Widebody cat reportedly is the first high-performance powerboat to be created using a computer-aided design (CAD) process known as Class-A Surfacing. The process creates surfaces that have continuous waves in a given shape or form, without undesired waves or other surface imperfections. The highly accurate design application is most often used in the automobile world.
The public will get its first official look at the M41 Widebody cat during the 2013 Miami International Boat Show in February. The boat reportedly will be in the Florida Powerboat Club’s Miami Boat Show Poker Run to Islamorada the following weekend.
