Have you ever heard of the Transformers? Marketed to children in the form of a cartoon show and a line of toys, the Tranformers are mechanical creatures that can morph from an automobile or animal into a humanoid robot that can walk and talk just like a person. One minute, they're a Volkswagen Bug; the next, they're a gun-toting hero out to save the universe.

The Crestliner Rampage 2100 I/O is also a transformer of sorts. Although it doesn't have a humanoid mode, the boat does have a conversion bow that can switch between fishing and cruising modes in a matter of seconds. This built-in versatility makes the Rampage a fishing and skiing force to be reckoned with.

Crestliner itself has gone through a transformation of sorts. When most boaters think of the name Crestliner, they think pontoon boats, but the Rampage is one of the company's forays into building an aluminum-constructed V-hull boat. The result is a craft that gets on plane quickly and doesn't look back.

We tested the Crestliner Rampage 2100 I/O on Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin. It was a beautiful, clear day, and what would have otherwise been a flat lake was made rough and choppy from local boaters taking advantage of the gorgeous weather.

We had three adults and 7/8 of a tank of fuel on board during our ride. Our test boat was powered by a 220 hp 5.0L MerCruiser stern drive.

The Rampage handled extremely well in the choppy waters. Even in those conditions, the boat was able to reach plane in 6 seconds.

The boat did well in turns, and we experienced quick acceleration. The MerCruiser stern drive had plenty of muscle; however, the controls were very stiff. The overall handling was excellent, though.

During our test, we were able to hit a top speed of exactly 50 mph (at 4,800 rpm). Our GPS showed a cruising speed of 30.9 mph (at 3,000 rpm). That should be more than enough speed to get to the fish when you need to.

A bow trolling motor is available as an option, if you're looking to sneak up on the fish.


We would be content to sit and play all day long with the Rampage's conversion bow. If you're an angler, you can keep the bow as a standard fishing platform with a Pro-Form II fishing chair and a 17-gallon aerated livewell. If you're planning to do some exploring or skiing with friends, you can quickly switch to cruising mode, which transforms the bow into a forward seating area for two.

Both the starboard helm console and the deluxe port console (with locking glove box) have a tinted windscreen for protection. The helm station includes tilt steering and full instrumentation.

A sliding sport bucket captain's seat serves the helm. A J-shaped settee wraps around the front of the transom and then along the port side, going forward all the way to the port console. An oval pedestal table with two drink holders stands at the inside corner of the settee.

A padded aft sundeck runs along the transom. A pop-up changing room is hidden inside. A portable head can be added to the space as an option.

Standard equipment includes navigation lights with bow task lights, a Bimini top with a boot, a 12v power outlet, a 12/24v trolling motor panel with trim switch, an AM/FM/cassette stereo system with two speakers, a horn, a fire extinguisher, an automatic bilge pump, marine hardware and a 25-quart cooler.

A fish finder is optional, as are a stern swim platform, an AM/FM CD stereo system with four speakers, a ski tow and a custom travel cover.
