  6. Custom Boyd / McGruer Daysailer

    Custom Boyd / McGruer Daysailer

    Urbanna, Virginia
    1980
    $18,000

Built by McGruers of Scotland in 1980, This superb little daysailer was designed in 1977 by David Boyd, a draftsman in the office of William Fife III who went on to become one of Britain’s best known yacht designers in his own write throughout the 1950’s and 60’s.  Reportedly this was Boyd’s last design. Boyd’s racing yachts won some of the most prestigious competitions of his era. His 6-Metres won the Seawanhaka Cup three times, the equally high-profile One Ton Cup, more than half-a-dozen Solent Silver Medals and top-scoring individual yacht honors in the British America’s Cup.  David Boyd’s best-known work from the post-war era was that of three 12-Metre yachts he designed for the America’s Cup.  VICTORIOUS has been described as a miniature 12-Meter, and undoubtedly represents the culmination of David Boyd’s success with 6-Meters and other small racers.  Some have said she is a modernized Piper One Design; the dimensions are very similar. The Piper is now built as the Rustler 24 still with the full keel. Everybody knows Fife, but there were other fine builders in Scotland and McGruer was one of the best.   Construction of VICTORIOUS features double-planked mahogany with closely spaced steam bent frames, gleaming varnished topsides and a solid teak deck.  Her bottom was professionally sheathed in fiberglass in the 1990’s and remails fair and tight. The typically British deep narrow cockpit offers excellent protection, with a sole and helm seat of varnished teak grating and a contoured forward seat that is artfully laminated in 15 2mm layers. New Elvstrom sails in 2004, a low maintenance aluminum rig, full cockpit cover, and custom trailer allow for easy set-up and transport.   There are no running back-stays and all sheets and halyards are easily reached from the cockpit, so she would be easy to single-hand. Sail inventory: Elvstrom tri-radial Pentax main and Genoa 2004, Elvstrom asymmetric spinnaker 2004, older main, no 1, 2, 3 headsails, spinnaker, drifter. VICTORIOUS was brought to the US by her current owner in in 2004, and is currently on her trailer, under cover in Virginia.   The plan is to bring her to Maine in June – hopefully for racing at Camden Classics in July! Her name was given to her because she was built as birthday present by a father to his daughter, her name being Victoria Stewart.
