  2. Herreshoff Fish Class

    Herreshoff Fish Class

    Sakonnet Harbor, Rhode Island
    1916
    $44,900

SEA ROBIN (HMCo #807) was commissioned in 1916 by Bertram G. Work as SARDINE and built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, RI.   She was purchased by JP Morgan in 1917, renamed SEA ROBIN and presented to his son Junius upon his return from Europe following his service in WW I.  The half model shown came with the boat at the time of its delivery. SEA ROBIN is one of only 23 boats in the original Seawanhaka fleet, and of those 23 boats only 9 are extant and can be traced back to their original hull number.  This is a rare opportunity indeed! The Fish Class is and enlarged version of the ubiquitous Herreshoff 12 ½, with the same virtues of stability, rough water ability, good looks, and excellent handling characteristics. While she is only 4’ longer than the 12 ½, she has twice the displacement and thus, in real terms, is twice as big.  The Fish is generally a fine, handy, compact boat that will keep the sailing fun even when conditions are less than optimum. She will sail fast at moderate angles of heel, and like her smaller cousins features a large, deep cockpit that will be reassuring for folks of all ages and will be particularly good for couples with small children. For the more adventurous, SEA ROBIN is equipped with a small galley, bunks, and a full cockpit tent for cruising - which the current owners have done regularly.  The cuddy cabin allows for storage space and some privacy for use of a head or bucket.  She also comes with a 2hp auxiliary outboard motor.  SEA ROBIN was rebuilt in the 1980's by Ed McClave and Ben Philbrick. She is marconi rigged and will be sailing this summer.

  5. N.G. Herreshoff Biscayne Bay 14 Skiff

N.G. Herreshoff Biscayne Bay 14 Skiff

    New Hampshire
    1990
    $9,800

SILVER LINING is an authentic replica of the Herreshoff Biscayne Bay 14. She was built by Randall Milner, Hudson Valley Wooden Boats in Wallkill NY. The hull is marine plywood, the floor boards are teak, all varnished brightwork is mahogany and the hand crafted spars are Sitka Spruce.   The sails were made by Gambell & Hunter Sailmakers in Camden ME. SILVER LINING has a trailer, and is located on Lower Kimball Lake in NH, near Fryeburg ME.  The owner reports her condition as an eight out of ten. Whether designed as an AMERICA’s Cup defender or the tender for it, each of N.G. Herreshoff’s yachts was very carefully thought through, and then critically examined. The comparatively simple Biscayne Bay 14 skiff is no exception. After studying the fleet of these for their first season, Herreshoff commented, “They have proved a great success, being safe, fast, and able, and they handle beautifully.” A dozen of these skiffs were built in 1925 for the Adirondack School, which had a station at Coconut Grove. Originally intended for the shoal Florida waters for which the design is named, this 14-footer is a shallow-draft, keel-and-centerboard combination, will float in a mere foot of water, and weighing in at about 1000 lbs, will be handy to trailer behind a SUV or mid-sized car. The Herreshoffs were noted for strong construction using light scantlings. The Biscayne Bay boat has a double-chined hull built with marine plywood and steam-bent half-frames (that is, the frames stop short of the keel where they connect with floor tim-bers). This knuckled hull looks better than a single-chined, V-bottomed hull of plywood construction, and behaves more like a round-bottomed boat when heeled.
