Mike’s vision to build a new classic styled model started to become more than just an idea back in early April 2020 when discussions and sketches between Mike and Arthur ( Nelson designer) soon resulted in drawings flying back and for in earnest. Those early days in lockdown provided a window of space and an uninterrupted time to reflect on what Mike really wanted to achieve from this latest design. Mike had already received unprecedented interest in both our Classic 35 and Classic 45 and there was an appetite out in the market for a beautifully built boat with classic styling but of a more manageable size than our iconic 45 and more accommodation than our 35. In reality, the 37 provides the 45 accommodation and wheelhouse, in a smaller boat, with the same acclaimed underwater semi displacement hull shape used on our DALE 40. All in all, a lot of boat with classic styling and pedigree for cruising with confidence, reassurance and security.

The first of our judel/vrolijk collaborations, the famed Contest descriptor of ‘all-weather’ sailing now extended further. Into light-wind performance. For Mediterranean-style sailing as well more classic bluewater voyaging. And a new structural approach bringing reduced displacement, increased stiffness and opened interior volume for greater accommodation. All big wins. And with a choice of carbon or aluminium rig, the yacht can be tuned specifically to intended purpose. As can the interior with optional arrangements from master cabin forward or aft and for three to five sleeping cabins for family and friends. There’s the option, too, of a crew cabin, either forward or midships, meaning charter can also be added into the mix.
Developing the concept for a new project is, above all, a journey. It is an experience where the only limit is your imagination, on a quest for sensations, for materials, geometries and forms – to express the essence of a style that must be utterly unique, in every aspect. We have not settled for dreaming up an ingenious concept with state-of-the-art technical solutions, increasingly inspired interiors, and living spaces of unprecedented comfort. In the Contest 49CS, our first twin aft-cabin yacht at this length, we have developed something new, different and yet reassuringly consistent with Contest credentials. A natural step up from the Contest 42CS, and equal new step into the Contest range for sailors preferring their master suite forward and family or guest cabins in the back.And what cabins these are, they’re huge for the 50ft (15.5m) sector. A 15kW electric motor is the equivalent of a 50hp diesel engine on our 40-43ft yachts.
