Did the Pandemic have you dreaming of far-off destinations? According to National Geographic, 71% of the World is covered by oceans leaving you with endless adventures.  The pandemic caused a shift for me making me realize life is too short not to live it every day. There are still so many journeys I would like to take, so many places for me to explore and so here I am as an Expedition Yacht fan starting the new Bering Expedition Club (BEC). Why am I starting the BEC? Alexei Mikhaylov the CEO of Bering Yachts set out to build the world’s best yachts within a specific size range. He has achieved this goal and turned Bering into what it is today—the premiere Expedition Boat within the 72-145 Feet class. Bering focuses on three pillars: safety, comfort and reliability using the best naval architecture possible and builds boats using steel and aluminum. Simply put, Bering Yachts are unmatched in their class. You can learn much more through the countless Youtube Videos or on the Bering site. Alexei originally started Bering by building a Bering 55 but eventually the sizes and the subsequent prices started creeping forward. A Bering 50 was sketched but due to low market demand it was never launched. Recently the 65, which was the defacto baby of the fleet, was removed from the range. This leaves the Bering 72 as the entry level and most economical of the Expedition Fleet. It is the optimal size for a BEC boat—a CE A boat with a 4,500 nautical range, cruising speed of 8 knots, up to 4/5+1 cabins, and a perfect boat to live the global expedition dream. The 72 will be purchased and shared through a fractional program with 4-8 like-minded adventure seeking owners. I will be working a leading Fractional Company Seanet or Monacle (depending on the number of partners) to manage the purchase and general ongoing management of the Bering 72. Each company allows a different number of partners but has very similar management programs. Each share will be roughly $1.35M with shared expenses each year for 4 partners and $662,500 for 8 partners. This will include 72 days per year (4 partners) or 36 (8 partners) on the yacht managed by a fractional scheduling system. Partners could choose to buy more than 1 share. The Annual Operating Costs with 2 full time crew going between Mid-Atlantic/New England and Florida/Caribbean be around $500,000 per year (shared amongst the group) based on another Seanet program on a new similar sized yacht. Although the boat will mostly be used by separate owners, it is my hope that sometimes part of the group will use the group together. Note: Some Annual Operating Costs can be deferred by allowing the boat to charter a portion of the year. Next Steps?
