Many people don’t bother to update their chartplotter with the latest software and chartography. That’s too bad, because each and every update that comes out brings with it valuable advantages. Watch as we update a Lowrance HDS Gen2 Touch with the latest software and a new version (35) C-Map N+ chart chip. We found one cool new feature that became apparent from the moment the chartplotter fired back up.

The Active Captain feature may have been the very first thing we noticed, but it wasn’t the only improvement. Also evident was a speedier chart re-draw. In fact, every time we panned or zoomed things just seemed to move a little bit more quickly. That’s because the update to software version 5.5 included optimization in the C-Map chart engine which netted a 50-percent faster re-draw.

The new software also added a nine-axis compass, which delivers a heading accuracy of plus or minus two degrees and a pitch/roll range of 45 degrees; a “Local Weather” feature for SiriusXM satellite weather, which allows you to place the cursor on any location and receive instant condition data; and a network analyzer with built-in service features. When connected to WiFi via Lowrance’s WIFI-1, system reports can be uploaded directly to Lowrance customer support. And of course, as we mentioned in the video, a WiFi link also allows you to download future updates directly, without swapping out chips. (To learn more about getting WiFi on your boat, read Get Connected: WiFi on Boats).

After watching this video, are you ready to update your chartography and software? We sure hope so. Doing so is a piece of cake, and as you saw with your own eyes, provides some real advantages.
