Question: I’m constantly having to unscrew the antenna cable connection at the base of the mast on my sailboat to clean out built up corrosion. The standard PL259 connection seems to hold water and salt spray inside it causing the corrosion. Any tips on how to get around this annoying problem?
Answer: Absolutely! In my book Advanced Marine Electrics and Electronics Troubleshooting I discuss this very problem. I’ve found a readily available product, 3 M Scotch #2228 Rubber Mastic Tape, that does a great job of sealing out moisture on these and any other application where you want to keep water out. The tape is described as “self-fusing” by the manufacturer, and believe me it really is! Once you wrap this tape around anything (allowing the wraps to overlap on top of each other) you will have a super watertight seal. I get my 2228 from the electrical department at my local big box store. Give it a try.
