History and Construction Details

This nearly mint condition classic small ship cruising yacht was designed by J.B. Hargrave of West Palm Beach and constructed by the Burger Boat Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1965. Built as a pleasure craft for the rich and famous, Sea Star (originally Aquarius) was the largest all-welded aluminum yacht of its time.

 

Originally purchased new and named Aquarius in the summer of 1965, by her first owners Mr. and Mrs. Jon Dimmick, she was proudly featured in the January 1966 Motor Boating Magazine – Boat Show Special Issue.

"Sea Star" has been well maintained over the decades and still has much of her original beauty and charm throughout. When recently surveyed for insurance purposes, the surveyor stated that he truly felt he had stepped into a time-warp as she did not look a day over 5 years as a result of her untouched classic charm, beauty and overall condition.

 

Hull: Marine grade aluminum plate, 3/8” thick, by design transitioning to 5/16” thick plate before the turn of the bilge. Frames, stiffeners and longitudinals are all marine grade aluminum, 5/16” thick. Scantlings appear appropriate for vessel’s design and intended purpose.

Decks, Bulwarks and Cabin: Marine grade aluminum. Exterior decks are overlaid with thick, conventional teak decking that is bonded to the aluminum structural deck and fastened from the underside with stainless steel screws. Bulwarks and decks are 5/16” thick. Cabin sides are ¼” thick.


Interior Finishes: Yacht quality wood work and linings throughout.

 

Propellers: Twin 4-bladed stainless steel, 40” diameter x 44” pitch, marked “R” and “L”. Both props were inspected, pitch checked and fit to the new shaft tapers By Sound Propeller of Seattle, WA. in 1/2023.


Tailshafts: Twin shafts made of 2 ¾” diameter stainless steel alloy joined externally to intermediate shafts by 12” muff couplings. Both tailshafts and intermediate shafts (4-pieces total) were made new by Sound Propeller and installed in 2/2023.


Struts: Aluminum, single vee strut and a single pedestal strut per shaft.

 

Shaft Bearings: Four (4) rubber cutlass bearings per shaft. One in each strut and one each in the forward and aft end of each shaft tube. All new in 2/23.


Shaft Packing Glands: Tides Marine dripless shaft seals. Rudders: Two (2) spade rudders made of ½” thick stainless steel plate, each approx. 23” x 34” and having 2” dia. stainless steel stocks fitted with conventional packing glands.

 

Stabilizers: One set of Vosper Maxi-Fin stabilizers with fins measuring approx. 24” x 36” and having 2 1/4” stainless steel stocks located midship.

 

Through Hulls and Sea Valves: Welded aluminum thru-hulls above and below the waterline. Sea valves are bronze. All sea valves operated normally.


Bow Thruster: Hydraulic 10” dia. bow thruster with twin 3-blade bronze props fitted with prop nut aluminum anodes. Powered by PTO driven hydraulic pump on the port main engine. The bow thruster hydraulic motor was rebuilt in 2/2023.
Transducers:
- Port side: One (1) transducer and one (1) knot meter fwd of midship.
- Stbd side: Two (2) transducers starboard side fwd of midship.

Color Hull Painted: Above W/L: white, Below W/L: red, Boot stripe is blue. Bottom Last Painted: 2/2022. Touched up as needed in 2/2023.

Topsides Last Painted: 2/2023. Name & Homeport: On transom. Name only on varnished name boards atop the pilothouse.

Swim Platform: Teak supported by six (6) aluminum 3/8” thick struts and fitted with a removable stainless steel railing.

Guards: Upper and lower welded aluminum guards.

Anodes: Aluminum anodes. One (1) prop anode on each thruster prop; Two (2) approx. 6” x 6” plate anodes per vee-strut; One (1) 6” x 6” plate anode per pedestal strut; Two (2) small tear drops on each rudder; Three (3) collar anodes on each shaft; Two (2) approx. 3” x 16” bar anodes per side on the keel. Anodes were renewed during the February 2023 haul-out.

 

Lube Oil Storage: Welded steel, 40 gallon tank located in the engine room.

Sanitation System: Type III MSD system consisting of the following: One (1) epoxy coated 85 gallon integral aluminum combination blackwater/graywater tank servicing the guest cabins (4 toilets) on centerline in the engine room utilizing a 110V Jabsco discharge pump and discharge standpipe also located in the engine room; One (1) 40 gallon stainless steel, blackwater only holding tank servicing the crew’s quarters (2 toilets) and utilizing a centrifugal pump driven by a 110V motor. The system uses American Standard toilets in six heads and is equipped with the necessary valves and transfer/discharge pumps. Flushing water can be seawater or potable water. Total holding tank capacity is 125 US gallons.
The vessel is also equipped with an obsolete, non-functional Type I or Type II MSD.

Watermaker: Sea Recovery, Aqua Whisper rated at 70 gal/hr.

Other: Two spare bronze propellers; Boarding stairs; one spare stabilizer fin; Raw water wash down pump, Goulds model 1ST1D4D4, stainless steel 1” x 1 ¼” stainless steel; centrifugal pump driven by a ¾ hp electric motor; Work bench and assorted tools in the engine room; Dedicated deck box for garbage storage; Miscellaneous canvas covers for hatches, skiffs and deck equipment (all new); Five (5) kayaks.

 

Vessel Description and Layout Overview

SEA STAR is an 85 ft. aluminum flush deck motor yacht designed by Jack Hargrave and built by Burger Boat Co. in Manitowoc, WI. in 1965. In profile the vessel shows a raked stem with “S” curve, slight sheer forward flattening out aft, deep fore foot, displacement hull, round bilges with a length of hard chine in the final aft quarters and a broad, slightly curved transom. There is a long fore deck with anchor windlass forward followed by a teak scuttle over a forward companionway then a bench seat/deck locker and large storage spaces with port and starboard access doors. Next aft is the deck house with the pilothouse forward followed by the galley, main salon and aft salon/dining area that is full width and can be accessed through teak doors from the side decks. Further aft is the short aft deck with storage space and lazarette access.

 

Pilothouse: Within the pilothouse are the helm station forward, stairway (stbd side fwd) leading down and forward to habitability spaces along with a raised, upholstered bench seat and chart table aft. Port and starboard pilothouse doors lead out onto the side decks. Aft to starboard is a passageway leading to the galley and main salon. A second set of doors open to the side decks from the passageway (stbd) and outboard in the galley (port).

 

Galley: The fully equipped “Pullman” style galley is arranged athwartship to port of the aforementioned passageway.

Main Salon: Aft of the galley is the main salon with built-in cabinetry and entertainment center to starboard along with generous amounts of seating for ten people. Additionally, stairs leading aft and down to the four guest staterooms are located port forward in the main salon.

Dining Salon: Located aft of the main salon this space is enclosed, full width and is outfitted with a dining table that seats 10 people, breakfast/coffee bar atop a storage cabinet, chest freezer and an under the counter refrigerator. Additionally, the dining salon can be accessed directly from the port and starboard side decks.

Aft Deck: Aft of the dining salon is a short, full width aft deck accessed from the dining salon and by way of a door and by way of a ladder leading up from the swim platform. Located in the aft deck sole is an access hatch to the lazarette.

Boat Deck: Atop the main salon and accessed by way of a port side deck vertical ladder is the boat deck with navigation equipment, mast and exhaust funnel forward followed by a long full width open deck flanked with pairs of boat davits, two tenders in chocks, a deck locker and kayaks.

Crew’s Quarters: Below the main deck starting forward is the fore peak chain locker followed by a crew’s quarters double stateroom with upper and lower berths to starboard, a dinette to port along with a collapsible/removeable single berth which installs over the dinette. Next aft is a centerline passageway with a crew’s head having an enclosed shower to port and a single crew’s stateroom to starboard with a small vanity sink. Continuing aft is another single stateroom having a private head and vanity sink to port along with curved stairs, washer and dryer and a utility/storage space with mid-sized refrigerator to starboard. A large hatch in the passageway sole provides access to a below deck tank and storage space. At the aft end of the passageway is the engine room entry door. The crew’s quarters can accommodate up to five crew members.

Engine Room: Aft of the forward habitability spaces is the engine room which generally contains the following: Twin Caterpillar model D343 main engines with Twin Disc transmissions; Two diesel gensets, a Kohler 17 kW and a Kohler 20 kW unit; Starting and navigation batteries along with their related components; Electrical distribution panels (120V & 240V AC, 12V , 24V and 32V DC), Autopilot steering system; Water maker; Vosper stabilizers and related components; Bilge pump with manifold; Wash down pump; Pressurized fresh water system components including a hot water tank; Fuel filter/water separators and fuel manifold and MSD system components.

Guest Cabins: Aft of the engine room and accessed by stairs from the main salon are four guest staterooms each with a full, ensuite head having an enclosed shower. The staterooms are located two port and two starboard and are separated by a centerline passageway. Each stateroom is typically outfitted with built-in dressers, lockers and under berth storage (See pictures on page 20). Total capacity for the guest staterooms is twelve people.

Lazarette: Furthest aft in the vessel is the lazarette which is accessed from the aft deck. Within the lazarette are the 24V house battery bank, an inverter/charger and the vessel’s steering gear.

Main Salon

Relax in the spacious and cozy Main Salon complete with large viewing windows and ample seating for all guests. Whether easing into the day with a cup of coffee, joining a rousing card game in the afternoon or curling up to watch the day draw to a close, the Main Salon offers something for every guest.

Pilothouse

Come visit with the Captain up in the Pilothouse! While there you can explore the charted route, learn more about the places you are exploring (either on the Kenai Peninsula in Prince William Sound) or even take a turn at the wheel. Or if you prefer, take a seat on the elevated bench seat and enjoy an unrestricted view of the beautiful scenery while also keeping a look out for whales and other exciting Alaska wildlife. The pilothouse has a full complement of navigation equipment and communications systems along with array of redundant (back up) systems.

Dining Salon

The Dining Salon is well appointed with wrap-around windows and a grand teak dining table that expands to accommodate all guests. Also includes a large, cushioned settee, wet bar with sink, refrigerator for cold beverages throughout the day, and a water/coffee/tea station. The Dining Salon provides the perfect atmosphere for enjoying a conversation, an appetizer or a sumptuous gourmet meal. This is cruise ship dining at its finest!

Galley and Laundry

"Sea Star's" large commercial grade galley comes equipped with all the modern appliances and conveniences a chef needs to create the many elegant and delicious dishes that will delight you throughout the day. The “Sandpiper” Cabin – A Comfortable Cabin for Three
Sea Star’s comfortable Sandpiper cabin for three. This cabin provides the perfect spot for three travelers out on an Alaska expedition. Includes luxurious linens, ample pillows and opening screened porthole windows to keep the air fresh. Two dressers and a closet are provided for your convenience. This private en-suite cabin has three separate bunks, a head with shower, and includes opening porthole windows, electric heater, additional storage space and many fluffy towels.

 

The “Kittiwake” Cabin – A Spacious Cabin for Three

Sea Star’s spacious Kittiwake cabin for three, this cabin is just the place for a couple, a group of friends or even a family out exploring Alaska. Includes multiple opening screened porthole windows to keep the air fresh, deep and luxurious linens and ample pillows for everyone’s comfort. A dresser, storage locker and counter space are provided for your convenience. The private en-suite head includes a tub/shower combination, additional storage space and plenty of fluffy towels.

Outside Deck

Sea Star offers a spacious open bow area complete with a spectacular 240-degree view that you can enjoy from a fully cushioned settee situated just in front of the pilothouse. And should the weather turn a little misty, you can continue enjoying Alaska’s wonders by using the covered wrap-around companion ways and after deck area. Whatever the time, temperature or weather, Sea Star provides multiple options for continuing to enjoy the stunning sights and sounds of Alaska. The entire outside deck is teak that is soft and cool on the feet and eliminates the suns harsh deck reflection like that of fiberglass decks.

Deck Equipment

Anchor Windlass: Ideal, 120V AC windlass with line handling capstan and chain wildcat.
Anchors and Chain:
- Main: Forfjord #18, 210 lb. housed in a stbd side hawse pipe with reportedly 460’ of ½” open link galvanized chain.
- Spare: Danforth, 210 lb. with 200 ft. of 3-strand nylon rode.
Escape Hatch: Large scuttle and companionway on centerline in overhead of fwd stateroom leading to the fore deck.
Mooring Cleats: Cast 12” aluminum cleats welded to doubler plates arranged port and stbd with two at the bow, two on the fore deck, two on the side decks and two at the stern. Each with a closed stainless steel chock except for two each at the stern.
Railings: Varnished teak rail caps with painted aluminum stanchions atop the teak bulwark cap rail on the fore deck and side decks. The fore deck railings have a mid-course of stainless steel cable. The bow is fitted with a stainless steel pulpit railing.
Boat Davits: Two (2) pairs of curved pipe davits located on the boat deck, one set port and one set to stbd. Each davit is equipped with an AC electric hoist winch.
Man Overboard (MOB) Davit: Portable davit that mounts to existing hardware on the aft deck. Stowed in the forward starboard locker.

Ships Skiffs

Sea Star has two tenders that are identified as a rigid inflatable boat (RIBs). The primary ship-to-shore RIB is a 2018 aluminum 15-foot Highfield with a 50 HP Yamaha outboard engine that can carry up to 9 people. The secondary RIB is a 1991 fiberglass 10-foot Achilles RIB with a 9.9 HP Nissan outboard engine used by the crew for general purpose tasks. Survitec 30-person life raft in float free cradle.

Electronics and Navigation

Magnetic Compass: Ritchie with 6” card in a chrome binnacle.
Electronic Compass/Heading Sensor/GPS: Lars Thrane model LT-1000 NRU.
Nav. Lights: Green, red, fwd steaming, stern and anchor.
Steering: Single helm station with 36” wood ships wheel. Manual cable steering with an autopilot having a 32V DC motor and pneumatic clutch. The steering cable runs aft to a single quadrant on the starboard rudder which is linked to the port rudder by a jockey bar. Emergency tiller located in the lazarette. Older system but appeared good.
VHF Radios: (1) Standard Horizon model GX2000; (1) ICOM model IC-M604; (1) ICOM model IC-M80.
Loud Hailer: Raytheon model RAY350
Weather Receiver: Furuno model NX-300 NavTex.
Satellite Communication Systems:
- MSAT system with Mitsubishi model ST141 voice and PTT tag phone.
- Iridium Go Satellite system with voice, data and email.
Radars:
- Primary: Furuno model FAR 1518-BB with roller ball mouse and Dell display monitor.
- Secondary: Furuno model 1954C-BB NAVnet vx2 using Argonaut model Tflex G615 display.
Chartplotters:
- Primary: Dell desktop computer and display using Rose Point Nav program.
- Secondary: Furuno NAVnet vx2 with GD1920C-BB using Argonaut model Tflex G615 display.
AIS: Furuno model FA-170.
Depthsounder/Fishfinders:
- Primary: Furuno FCV-588 with a 1000 watt transducer.
- Secondary: Furuno NAVnet vx2 using Argonaut model Tflex G615 monitor.
GPS: Two (2) Furuno GPS/WAAS units, 1- GP32 and 1- GP33.
Autopilot: Simrad model AP40 with AP25 and AP27 controllers.

- Omnisense model Ulysses Micro marine thermal/night vision camera.
