Wakeboard Boat Review By Wakeboarding magazine Rusty Malinoski
The MasterCraft X-Star is The Man. It’s probably the most well-known
wakeboard boat out there. The X Games uses it. The Pro Wakeboard Tour
uses it. Parks Bonifay, Shane Bonifay, Andrew Adkison and more all have
one. The MasterCraft X-Star has even been on display in the Supercross
series and the Dew Action Sports Tour. It’s famous because it’s fully legit,
with arguably the greatest wake in history. That was obvious the moment
MasterCraft unveiled its breakthrough hull design, and riders have been
raving about it ever since. Up top, passengers love the pickle fork bow
that’s the signature look of the MasterCraft X-Star. MasterCraft Boats of
course fully outfits this wakeboard boat so it is, no question, a first-rate,
world-class wake machine for performance and lifestyle.
Climb in from the front if you want, and totally spread out in a bow that
seems more like a cockpit lounge.
The below-the-floor 850 pounds is spread out in two rear ballast tanks and
one center bag near the bow.
You can’t budge the Zero Flex Flyer tower, which has swiveling wakeboard
racks with new tighter clamps.
MasterCraft calls it the Anything’s Possible hull. It’s the key to the
MasterCraft X-Star, with a design that sculpts ideal wakes.
The suspended speedo, tach and cruise control have new billet aluminum
housings and red-faced gauges.
The perfect ramp. Really, ride it and see if you agree. The length, the size,
the peak – it’s all an amazing balance between steep and mellow. Charge it
and your board never slows down, as if you weren’t even hitting a wake. But
then, before you know it, you’re booted. Magic? Maybe. Engineering that
regular people can’t figure out? Definitely. The size is good for
intermediate riders with factory ballast. As much as advanced riders love
this wake, they love it even more when those ramps become huge thanks to
some more added ballast.
“There’s no other wake like the X-Star’s. It’s a big launch ramp on
definitely a clean, consistent wake. It makes doing really big moves out to
the flats a lot easier. And I’m stoked on the new graphics. Is the
MasterCraft X-Star gonna help me have an even better year in ’06? That’s
the plan, for sure.”MasterCraft boats are seeing more action in saltwater, as inland skiers, wakeboarders and water sports enthusiasts relocate closer to coastal markets. Traditional saltwater boats just don’t have the same towing characteristics as MasterCraft, so it’s only natural that MasterCraft would equip these boats with the most saltwater-friendly components available. MasterCraft did not just slap a “saltwater” engine in their current line and declare these boats saline worthy. Instead they spent hundreds of hours offshore in Florida testing components like stainless steel gas shocks, hydraulic steering, fully sealed wiring, sacrificial anodes, raw water strainers, and the Crusader engines in the roughest conditions to ensure MasterCraft is able to carry their solid reputation into this market. The SS line will increase the lifespan of vulnerable parts and help maintain MasterCraft’s excellent reputation for premium resale-ability.
The X-Star SS offers a choice of Crusader 330 hp, 375 hp or 425 hp GM Vortec engines. All of the SS engines are fresh-water cooled, protected with premium multi-coat non-corrosive paint and come with composite motor mounts.
In the cockpit, the X-Star?s nerve center stems from the X-Pod, wired with the latest control area network (CAN) technology and digital speed control with standard MasterCraft Cruise. This bullet shaped configuration of billet aluminum, red faced gauges suspends the speedometer, tachometer and Perfect Pass cruise control in full view of the driver. The remainder of the dash is constructed of carbon fiber and houses all other essential instrumentation. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather and has a chrome center. The molded armrest incorporates a chrome throttle knob and a new digital AM/FM CD stereo remote.
Amidship, there is wrap-around seating (covered in dense 38 oz vinyl with new hammered metal vinyl accents), 4 stereo speakers with separates, a subwoofer and 8 more drink holders. Underneath each of the seats there are open cavities for storage. The observer?s seat opens from amidship or the bow to form a dual access compartment large enough to fit 2 wakeboards and loads of supplies. Above the observer?s seat, there is also a carbon fiber glove box that houses the Clarion receiver, a 12V outlet and room for +/- 30 cell phones. Above the cockpit is the Zero Flex Flyer tower with tight-clamping and rotating board racks that hold boards firmly in place while swiveling them inside or outside the boat. Tower speakers are capable of projecting greater distances to the rider.
The stern is almost unchanged above the water line. The X-Star still has a triple hatch sun pad and a large removable swim platform for launching riders. However, it has been re-powered with MasterCraft?s multiport 310 hp, 5.7L, RTP-1 power plant under the center hatch. The RTP-1 offers more response, torque, and power in a multi-port injected package.
