Big bow riders continue to gain popularity, and it's not uncommon to see them in the 26-foot-long range. What is uncommon, however, is to find one that's as fun to drive as it is functional. New for the 2002 model year, Wellcraft's 260 Excalibur Sport could well fit that definition.
With a 375-horsepower MerCruiser 496 Mag engine providing the power, the 26'4"-long, 8'6"-wide bow rider reportedly runs 60.3 mph and has a time to plane of 3.2 seconds. According to the manufacturer, cruising range is 264 miles thanks to the boat's efficient Step Lift V-II bottom and 97-gallon fuel capacity.
Full instrumentation and a tilt steering wheel are standard at the helm. Also standard is a Clarion AM/FM CD stereo with a remote control.
A walk-through windshield provides access to the boat's open bow. To eliminate the "wind tunnel effect" so common to bow riders, the manufacturer supplied a bi-fold door in the walkway. Seating accommodations in the bow include a pair of lounges. An optional filler cushion transforms the entire bow seating area into a giant sunlounge.
The cockpit layout of the 260 Excalibur Sport was designed to maximize seating space. For the driver and co-pilot, the manufacturer supplied bucket seats. Aft of those seats is a generous L-shaped lounge, under which is enough space to stow a kneeboard or wakeboard.
Other highlights of the 260 Excalibur Sport include a power engine hatch, which can be activated at the helm. A variety of MerCruiser and Volvo Penta motors are offered for the boat. All engines are secured on through-bolted aluminum mounts. Deck hardware, all of which is stainless steel, also is through-bolted. The swim platform has a retractable boarding ladder, and there's a tow-eye on the transom.
Base price for the Wellcraft 260 Excalibur Sport with a Volvo Penta 5.7 GXI DP engine is $53,805.
