It's funny when the locals insist, "but it's a dry heat" — when you're sitting on the bow (in the shade) and your nylon shorts begin to bond with the fiberglass. When it's 110 degrees out, does it really matter if it's dry?
Regardless, if you're going to cook, Las Vegas is the place to be (at least at the Blackjack table).
Last September, Genmar invited the Go Boating Test Team to trial the Four Winns 200 Horizon at Lake Mead. Yeah, it was a scorcher, but so was the 200. At first glance, the boat looks like a sweet, compact craft with great contoured lines and a slick appearance. Stepping into the boat confirmed those first impressions.
The bolster seats were comfortable and sturdy, featuring a chop-absorbing suspension system and side air vents. The bolsters lift the seats high enough to provide good visibility for maneuvering. The new braceless windshield not only adds to the sporty new look, but provides an unobstructed view for drivers. The windshield's folding center section has a solid feel and allows for easy access to the bow. When powering away from the dock, we noticed that the Volvo Penta 5.7Gi 280-hp engine with SX drive really moved a lot of water. The boat also was easy to position and control at slow speed.
Heading out onto the lake, the 200 Horizon ran smoothly and quietly. As we idled out of the harbor at 500 rpm the cockpit noise was 87 dB, which is quite respectable. Once we were past the no-wake zone, we opened up the engine. The boat was pretty fast, reaching a top speed of 50 mph spinning a 19-inch pitched three-blade aluminum prop.
Don't forget that Lake Mead is approximately 1,100 feet above sea level. Operating a boat at high altitude will cause a drop in horsepower due to lower atmospheric pressure (less oxygen for combustions), so we had to prop the 200 a little bit shorter than usual.
Despite this, even with the 19-inch prop, we thought the 200 Horizon handled phenomenally well. It's a fast boat that is responsive and easy to operate.
The 200 Horizon went from 0 to 30 mph in 8 seconds and was up on plane in 5 seconds. There was a slight chop on Lake Mead that day, but the 200 handled it well and didn't pound or rattle. It had a solid feel.
At full throttle with the drive trimmed up, the boat maintains a good plane without getting squirrelly or experiencing chine walk. Into the turns, trimming the drive down gives the boat superb cornering capabilities. You can really push some serious Gs, if you want to, without blowing out the prop.
This drive setup experienced zero cavitation even when putting the wheel hard to port and then hard to starboard, back and forth at full throttle. Don't try this at home! The Volvo throttle mechanism was smooth and easy to shift.
The bow seating is comfortable and there are two beverage holders. Beneath both bow seats is ample storage, and the boat features an optional bow fill-in cushion that converts the bow into a convenient sunpad. There's also a decent-sized anchor locker in this area, which has a drain that empties overboard rather than into the bilge.
Four Winns' new helm concept makes its debut in the 200 — an automotive-style dash that maximizes driver visibility and brings a new sportier look to the customary marine helms. The upper dashboard shroud is charcoal gray, complemented to a lower shroud accented with burlwood and chrome. New four-in-one Faria Newport gauges are surrounded with silver bezels.
The boat comes standard with a shallow water alarm and an emergency engine shut-off. The port console mimics the driver-side dash, but houses a cooler, glovebox and a Clarion stereo/CD player. The 200 comes standard with four Clarion speakers and includes a SIRIUS satellite entertainment system with a pre-paid 1-year subscription that can be activated by the dealer upon customer request.
Cruising along, full throttle, sunny skies and Jimmy Buffet's "King of Somewhere Hot" pumping out at high volume, we thought to ourselves: "We need this boat!" It was hard to hand the keys back over to Four Winns after this E-ticket ride. If you're in the market for something hot, something sexy and something to take you to places you haven't been before — take a ride on a 200 Horizon.
