Ferretti’s in-house team and naval architect Fulvio De Simoni joined forces to create a new design aesthetic that has already proven to be so popular with the 2017 Pershing 5X Factor that a whole series of vessels is expected to follow. It’s a step in a bold new direction, and although the “X” in its name is borrowed from aviation (designating an aircraft that’s experimental or a prototype), this yacht seems well past being experimental.

Of note is the hydraulic swim platform that lowers two feet below the water’s surface. Surrounded by an added net, the platform becomes a 14-foot wide wading pool, perfect for kids or even pets. Also unique are the “fins” that sit just ahead of the cockpit at the side decks and serve to protect the cockpit from the elements. Finally, a nod to safety can be found in the high gunwales. Walking to the bow, there’s a feeling of security with nearly hip-high sides that will also keep you dry as you move around in a rough sea state.

Sunpads are obligatory on most vessels today and the 5X Factor doesn’t disappoint. Three sun worshippers can lounge on the bow while four will easily fit on the enormous sunbed aft. For those who want to feel the sun on their face but remain inside, the 5X Factor also has a large sunroof that brings fresh air to the two settees in the saloon.

Two cabins are standard: a VIP stateroom in the bow and a full-beam master with an athwartship bed aft. A third cabin (or crew quarters) may be added to the lower saloon, replacing the dinette and sharing the space with the galley.

Pershing yachts are known for their turn of speed so the 5X Factor is powered by twin Volvo Penta D11 IPS 950 725 HP pod drive diesels that will reach 35 knots. You can also opt for twin Caterpillar 12.9 1,000 HP diesels with shaft drives that will top out at 45 knots.

A bit of a radical departure for the Italian builder, the 5X Factor is finding its audience quickly. The new series to follow will likely be just as innovative, justifying the X factor moniker and drawing crowds to future boat shows.
