Description

"Whisper" is a well-built modification of the famous Nathaniel Herreshoff H28 sailing vessel from the 1920s. She was built by professional shipwrights in Port Townsend, WA and is capable of blue water cruising or local sailing, in comfort and safety. The hull is of heavily laid-up fiberglass laminate, while the frames, deck, and interior are wood, using solid and laminated tropical and Pacific Northwest hardwoods.  She is equiped with high quality sails, standing and running rigging, mechanical and electrical equipment, and has been well maintained.

Mechanical Equipment

Sabb 10G engine is in good running condition.  It has electric start and manual crank starting backup.  The engine drives a 2 blade reversible pitch propellor, with forward or reverse thrust controlled with a quadrant handle in the cockpit, and works well.  RPM is controlled by a second quadrant handle in the cockpit to move the throttle cable from low to high RPM or to move to an idle cutoff postion to shut off the engine.  The linkage hardware that attaches the throttle cable to the quadrant handle needs to be replaced or adjusted to make it operate more smoothly and reliably.

Deck and Hull Equipment

Electrical System:  12 VDC with two 12 VDC wet cells, mounted in a compartment under the aftmost adult size berth.  Battery charger is ProTech 1231i Plus.  Circuit breaker electrical panel in good condition.  Navigation and running lights installed per USCG requirements and in good condition.  Shore power system: 110 VAC with circuit breakers and GFCI protected duplex outlets. Power cable and plugs are in good condition.  Electric bilge pump has a float operated on/off switch so bilge pump is always switched to "on" at the electrical panel .  Pump capacity is 330 GPH.  There is a backup manual bilge pump operated from the cockpit.  All seacocks are bronze 1/4 turn, and the seacocks, hoses and hose clamps are in good condition.

Additional Equipment

Anchors: #1, Bruce 10kg plow with 250' galvanized chain.  #2, 40lb Danforth-type galvanized.  Anchor Windlass: Simpson-Lawrence 555, manually operated.  Canvas:  Full boat winter cover with framework, sail covers (one mainsail and two jibs), and Bimini top.  Lifelines: double stainless steel on bronze stanchions.  Mast, boom and 2 whisker poles: aluminum extrusions.  Winches: all Barient model 19 self-tailing, 3  for halyards and 4 for jib sheets (2 for staysail jib, mounted on main cabin roof and 2 for outer jib, mounted on cockpit coaming).

Navigation Systems

VHF Radio: Uniden UM625C.  Depth sounder: Coastal Naigation Digital.  Compass: Danforth , mounted on cockpit side of main cabin aft bulkhead.  Lighted for night-time visibility.  Sails: One mainsail, with manual furling (reef points at three levels), one light wind 150% Genoa, a second heavier weight 120% Genoa, a heavy weight jib staysail and a heavy weight outer (flying) jib.  All jibs are set up with luff grommets and jib hanks.  The Genoas and the flying jib also have luff wires to use with roller furling (not currently installed on "Whisper").  All sails are in good to excellent condition.  All standing rigging is 1x19 SS wire, with bronze chainplates, SS turnbuckles, SS mast tangs, and SS shroud/stay end connectors.  All running rigging and hardware (blocks, cleats, etc) are in good to excellent condition.  Old outer jib halyard needs to be replaced while mast is unstepped during winter indoor storage.  New halyard is already purchased.

Galley Equipment

Dickerson, Bering & Origo 3000 cooktop, whch uses diesel fuel.  Icebox refrigerator.  Cabin heated using galley stove.  Stainless steel galley sink with stainless water faucets and manual pump.  Generous storage space for food, dishes, utensils, cooking equipment and cleaning supplies.
