This is Kindred Spirit! A genuine blue water cruising beauty currently in Puerto Rico. Designed by Bob Harris. Built to an internationally acclaimed standard of construction by Ta-Yang. Ruggedly robust, yet graceful. Impeccable teak joinery inside enhances a secure and spacious interior that offers comfortable space for extended live aboard cruising or a weekend with the whole family. Powered by a main, genoa, staysail and spinnaker all in good to excellent condition with an auxiliary Yanmar 44hp engine.
Recent upgrades include a Freedom 458 inverter/charger, Garmin 441s chart plotter, ICOM AIS, Air Marine wind generator, all new standing rigging, a new Harken furler for the genoa and new lifelines and new bottom paint.
The interior features 6’3” headroom in the main salon, a generous V-berth and aft cabin. The galley has a separate refrigerator and freezer, 3-burner stove with oven, double stainless sink and hot/cold pressurized water. Kindred Spirit has an electric flush head with separate shower and lots of storage. A large bulkhead mirror augments the feeling of comfortable spaciousness in the salon. Three large hatches, two smaller hatches and six prisms add to a bright and airy interior.
On deck, new double lifelines are 32” high (no stooping). The mast has steps for safer and easier climbing and is flanked by a mast pulpit. The electric up/down windlass is housed in a dedicated hatch eliminating deck obstructions. Five stainless steel cowls funnel fresh air into the cabins. Teak hand rails on deck, a teak and bronze rub rail and teak cockpit trim add touches of elegance. A new dodger and bimini, with side curtains and an aft texiline sun shade make for a comfortable cockpit.
A double stainless sink with pressure hot and cold water and a separate carbon filtered drinking water faucet is flanked by a three-burner propane stove/oven supplied by two 20lb tanks in a cockpit lazarette. Hot water is supplied by a six gallon 12v Isotemp water heater. An ECH2O -Tec water maker with an output of 8.4 gallons/hour supplies scrupulously clean RO water away from shore. Fresh water is stored in two 70 gallon stainless tanks. An 1100 watt GE microwave offers additional cooking capacity. There’s a dual control freezer and fridge, with both air and seawater cooling and ample space for pots and pans under the sink. Deep drawers for kitchen utensils and supplies are between the stove and the sink. A custom dinnerware rack hangs from the starboard side just aft of the stove. Grocery storage is available in louvered-door cabinets above the freezer/fridge and the stove. A trash container is built in under the counter top and teak stairs lead to the cockpit. And for outdoor grilling, there’s a propane Dickinson Sea-B-Que stainless barbeque that attaches to the stern pulpit.
Features beautiful teak staving and impeccable Taiwanese joinery. Book shelves above the large contoured custom upholstered settees are flanked by louvered-door storage cabinets. The large drop leaf dining table seats five comfortably. A liquor cabinet is under the midsection of the table. A large framed mirror on the forward bulkhead adds cozy light. Light for reading at night is provided by three brass reading lamps. Generous storage lockers beneath settees can house provisions and/or major tools and spare parts. Two Bomar hatches and three prisms provide additional light. A large 4-drawer teak chest is at the entrance to the master berth above which is a magazine holder, a brass barometer and a brass clock. The sole is teak and holly throughout.
Enter the master berth from the salon through a beautiful teak privacy door featuring a carved Tayana emblem. Inside is a spacious V-berth (72 inches wide at aft end and 28 inches wide at bow with sides of 82 inches). Teak staving on both port and starboard hulls add a touch of elegance. The berth has a custom fitted mattress and sheets. Teak-louvered storage lockers are above the berth on both sides and there is a large open shelf above. A large hanging closet, with double teak-louvered doors, provides ample clothes storage. Shoe lockers are under the berth. There’s a large hatch over the berth and a huge sail locker and other storage under the entire V-berth.
Features comfortable custom fitted mattress and sheets, teak-staved sides, a large hanging closet and a narrow four-drawer chest. Two drawers are under the berth and open shelf storage is above. Three port lights with screens provide light and ventilation.
The head has a Jabsco electric flush toilet with a Jabsco Y valve to overboard or a holding tank. The sink is stainless with hot/cold pressure water. Four louvered teak lockers provide ample storage. There’s a separate shower with hot/cold pressure water and a teak seat with storage underneath. Additional storage is available in a teak-louvered closet above. The shower floor has a teak grate and there’s a fresh air hatch over the shower.
The aft cockpit has custom vinyl cockpit cushions with a raised seat at the helm and two throw pillows over grouted teak seats. Two folding seats with backrests and custom slipcovers complete the cockpit. A new custom Sunbrella dodger and bimini, with side curtains and an aft textilene sun shade provide protection from the elements. A rose tinted lexan sliding hatch cover over the companionway is complemented by a sliding screen. Lexan and wooden companionway boards offer security in addition to the lockable teak louvered companionway doors. There’s a Sunbrella hatch and companionway sun cover, a teak drink holder and a foldaway teak table with custom cover that seats four comfortably for dinner and more when partially folded as a tray for hors d'oeuvres. Teak grates keep the floor clean.
There are three large storage lockers beneath the starboard and stern seats.
The engine is a 44 hp Yanmar 4JHE with 6220 hours and is in excellent condition. It powers a three-blade Max -Prop. Diesel fuel is stored in two 60 gallon black iron tanks and there’s a Baja filter to keep diesel intake supply clean.
Electrical energy to the batteries is generated by a 120 amp alternator with a Xantrex in-charge regulator, supplemented by an Air X wind generator, with spare blades, and 375 watts of solar power. The house battery bank consists of three 245 amp Lifeline AGM batteries and a new separate Everstart 27D starter battery, charged with a Xantrex digital echo-charge. The system is regulated with a Freedom 458-20 inverter/charger and monitored by a Xantrex Freedom Basic Remote as well as a Xantrx LinkLITE monitor. 90 feet of 30 amp shore power cable with a 50 amp adapters take care of shore power needs.
The boat has a comprehensive list of safety equipment which includes an Avon 6-person life raft with a Sunbrella cover, an ACR 406 EPIRB, two Sospender auto-inflate life jackets, four additional neck collar jackets, a throwable Life Sling and collar, jack lines for night and rough seas sailing, a three million candle power portable GE spotlight, an ACR distress marker beacon, a flare gun with an assortment of flares, a spare Davis hand bearing compass, extra tall life lines, and an AIS ICOM MXA-5000 receiver. There’s a smoke detector in the cabin and multiple fire extinguishers located throughout the interior. The aft cabin houses an emergency teak tiller. There are two electric bilge pumps, one of which is an auto pump, and another manual pump in the cockpit, as well as a high-water bilge alarm.
AC and Heating
A Lunaire marine air conditioner/heat pump provides cooling and heating and a Dickenson diesel heater provides supplementary heat for those cold nights in Florida or a late November trip south on the ICW.
For entertainment, there’s a 19” Samsung TV, a Panasonic am/fm radio with CD player, a portable Memorex IPOD speaker system, a portable tape recorder and a stereo head set.
Two large 3-ring binders contain owners’ manuals and other information on virtually every system on the boat. Two 5-gallon diesel jugs and one 5-gallon water jug provide extra liquid storage. There are two 40’ AC extension cords; and dual AC and DC side-by-side electrical outlets are distributed throughout the boat.
Navigation is made easy with the help of a Simrad Robertson AP 20 autopilot, a Garmin 441s chartplotter with Caribbean charts along with CDs of Offshore Navigator software and Maptech electronic charts for the Cariibbean and east coast of the US. These are supplemented with paper charts for the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and the eastern US coast as well as cruising guides for the same areas. Two BU-535S4 ‘puck’ GPSs can connect to any computer navigation program. There are three Garmin handheld GPSs (Garmin 76, Garmin 72H and Garmin 72). The cockpit has DMI wind instrument, depth sounder and knot meter displays and a binnacle C-Plath compass. There’s a Furuno Model 1800 radar at the navigation station. The bow and stern running lights are Aqua Signal as are the mast head anchor and running lights.
For basic communications, there’s an ICOM M710 SSB and an ICOM M502 VHF at the nav station with a remote ICOM HM-157 VHF at the helm. There’s also a Standard Horizon HX260S handheld VHF. To minimize the problem of often less-than-congenial shouted communications between the helms person and the person on the bow dropping the anchor, there’s a Motorola Talkabout 2-way radio headset.
Deck and Hull Equipment
Deck and Hull
Pleasing cream-colored non-skid fiberglass sections integral to the deck are bordered by white fiberglass, all in good shape. The deck features three large Bomar hatches and two smaller ones all with screens, eleven stainless port lights, and five teak and stainless dorades with custom Sunbrella covers. It has stainless mast pulpits, extra tall (32”) lifelines, and teak handholds, with custom Sunbrella covers, for comfort and safety. The teak and stainless swim ladder and the life raft, with custom Sunbrella cover, sit on deck and a stainless flag mount with teak pole is on the stern, as is a very robust Sampson post. A slotted aluminum toe rail lines the deck and below deck-level is a teak and bronze rub rail. The hull is typically strong and thick Taiwanese fiberglass and she has a modified fin keel with a full rudder.
Anchoring and Docking
Ground tackle consists of a 73 lb Bruce anchor with 200’ of chain rode supplemented by a 45 lb CQR with 25’ of chain and 200’ of rope, both led through rollers at the bow. A Lofrans Tigres windlass below deck with up and down deck-mounted switches and both chain and rope gypsies make anchor deployment and recovery relatively painless. A salt water pressure pump at the bow helps to keep the anchors and rodes clean for stowage between use. As a backup, there’s also a Fortress FX 37 anchor with 200’ of rope rode stowed in a cockpit locker. For safety in a slip, there are six F5 Polyform fenders and ample line.
A Caribe 9’ hard bottom dinghy equipped with a 2-cycle 15 hp Yamaha Enduro engine provides safe and fast transportation from anchorage to dinghy dock. The dinghy comes with its own small CQR anchor and rope rode, a boarding ladder for snorkeling/scuba excursions and an air pump to keep it properly inflated. A Happy Hooker connector makes it easy to pick up a mooring.
Sails and Rigging
The sail inventory includes an elderly but ‘bullet proof’ main hand-crafted by Glenn Housley in Annapolis, a 120% genoa with a ProFurl furler, a staysail with a Furlex furler and a spinnaker in a sock, all in good condition and in storage during the summers. When not up, the main is contained in a zippered sail pack on the boom. The mast is aluminum by Isomat. The standing rigging is all new this year and the running rigging, all led back to the cockpit to a series of six Lewmar winches (plus one on the mast), is all in good to excellent condition, as are all the blocks and shackles. Five robust stainless winch handles and a portable electric Winch Mate take care of the tensioning.
