The Catalina 350 sloop won the Cruising World Sailboat of the Year award when she was first introducedIt’s easy to understand why because her design incorporates many great features usually only found in larger vessels.

These include a 13´ beam, making her feel like most 40´vessels inside, while ensuring easy handling for a couple. Her easy rig with roller furling genoa, self-tailing winches and sail controls which are led aft to the cockpit, seem to take the all the work out of sailing. A large 7’ cockpit with bimini and full enclosure, deep coamings and high seat backs make the cockpit another living room.  She also has Catalina’s Trademark wide weather decks, tall life lines and inboard shrouds, allowing for safe movement on deck in all weather conditions. The truly divided anchor locker has double rollers and an electric windlass.

Healing Time's interior offers 6’7” headroom, two private, large cabins with a centerline berth forward. Additional amenities include a double entry head with a separate stall shower, spacious main salon with multiple table options which can accommodate three more overnight guests if desired and a true U-shaped sea galley that will satisfy any cook. The air conditioning/heat will keep you comfortable in any climate. There is abundant storage which is great for extended cruising or for living-a-board.

Accommodations

The Catalina 350 has one of the most logical and useful layouts of any boat under 45’. Her 13’ beam and 7’ of headroom make her feel like a much larger boat. Most people think she is 38-40’. Her interior is all teak. No mystery wood and a lot of the wood is solid teak including the tables, fiddles, companionway steps, trim and door edges. Numerous opening ports and overhead hatches provide plenty of ventilation and natural light.

A stand-out feature of this model is her unique ability to have multiple table configurations in the salon. The starboard settee can be a settee/berth or can be easily converted to two comfortable seats with a small table in between. This becomes a great spot for a game of cards or happy hour with cocktails and snacks. The huge port side dinette can seat 6 around it and has the factory optional dinette conversion kit. This allows the table to drop down to use as a double berth or as a comfy spot to lounge while watching TV. In addition, the huge table can disappear to its area in the aft cabin where it is stored vertically out of the way against the hull and the smaller cocktail table can take its place. This option really opens-up the interior.

The aft end of the port settee doubles as a seat for the nav station. Directly opposite of the nav station is the U-shaped galley. The galley has refrigeration/freezer, double stainless steel sinks, propane stove and oven, microwave and lots of cabinets for dinnerware and supplies and a large dry locker for groceries.

The master stateroom forward has a center line berth, hanging lockers and drawer storage plus a private door to the over sized head that has a separate stall shower, vanity with sink, medicine cabinet and electric toilet. Few boats of this size have a really workable head with a separate shower stall.

The private aft cabin is equally as large as the master with a double berth and has its own storage with hanging lockers as well as aft access to the engine and transmission.

Besides the obvious cabinets, storage is everywhere in this boat: Behind the settees, under the settees, under the berths, under the cabin sole and even in the bilges. All the drawers have slides and all the lockers have ventilated teak doors. It would be easily feasible to cruise for a week with 6 persons aboard and have all the food and gear needed for it.

  • Varnished teak throughout
  • Teak and Holly cabin sole with custom carpet
  • Convertible dinette and main cabin tables
  • Large separate shower stall

Galley

Well-equipped, U-shaped galley conveniently located right at the companionway where you can easily access it at sea or underway.  Lots of counter space and storage.

  • Auxillary tiller with deck plate key access
  • HUGE cockpit storage. Starboard cockpit locker is huge and has two shelfs. There is both port and starboard aft cockpit lazarette storage and there is also storage in the swim platform. (For example, the starboard swim platform storage can hold three to four 6 gallon fuel or water jugs. Later 350 models had no easy access to this storage.)

Sails & Rigging

Broker's Remarks

What is the perfect boat?

As a broker, I would say the perfect boat is: 1) One that is comfortable and provides good accommodations for the owners and occasional guests; 2) One that is still manageable by one person under sail or while docking; and 3) Most importantly, one that you can afford.

Having sold boats for over 30 years, I can say that this boat fits that criteria extremely well. This model feels like you are getting a 38-40’ boat in a 35’ package.

The cockpit is over 7’ long and is wide enough to sleep on. There are no hard corners in the cockpit. Everything is rounded.

I have spent vacation time in the Bahamas aboard the brokerage owners' personal 350 and I can say that a couple can live aboard superbly with her very comfortable, centerline queen berth forward. Although she only has one head, there is a separate shower and that makes all the difference in how the head functions for long term voyages or living aboard.

Also, the salon has several table set-up options that makes it very versatile, as noted in the accommodation section above. The standard entertaining arrangement is to have the two smaller tables to port and starboard, which allows you entertain 6-7 people comfortably in the salon. Keep in mind, there is also a full-size cockpit table in the cockpit for outdoor dining as well, which is where you will want to dine most of the time you are aboard.

The galley in the Catalina 350 is also over-sized compared to most boats. Refrigeration space seems to be the biggest shortcoming on most boats. The 350 has a top and front-loading fridge and a top loading freezer. This is significantly more functional than the “drop in the hole, all in one” units everyone is using now. Both refrigeration units are 3 cubic foot in size. You can stock up more food than you could eat for a 3-week voyage on a 350.

The engine is also a bonus. While most boats this size have a 27-30 hp diesel, the 350 has a 4-cylinder 35 hp. That extra 5-7 hp makes all the difference in world if you are loaded up for cruising and you’re motoring…and you will be motoring at times!

The winches are the work horse of the sail handling system. The Catalina 350’s were one of the very few models equipped with the more expensive Harken, not Lewmar winches.  Not that there is a much difference in the make of the winches; but the size of the winches makes a huge difference.  Again, the halyard winches on the Catalina are the size of the primary winches on the other builder’s boats.

Overall, the Catalina 350 is well-constructed, has comfortable accommodations and is easy to sail. If not the perfect boat, she is definitely a great boat!
