Description

The original Malabar II was designed by John G. Alden as his personal yacht. He wanted to be able to single-hand with ease and race or cruise with his family. The Malabar II design is known for its beauty, simplicity and exquisite sailing characteristics. Her single, self-tacking jib allows you to tack her easily single-handed. Alyria is one of the more recent builds of this proven, iconic design. Built in 1996 by master wooden boat builder Lance Leonard in Lopez Island WA as his family boat.

General Build: Larch wood planking over white oak frames with bronze fasteners throughout. Centerline timbering in Costa Rican Purple Heart including rudder. Cockpit coaming, cabin sides, hatch covers and interior furniture and trim in South American Mahogany. Decks in quarter sawn, Port Orford Cedar, deck timbers in Douglas Fir. The wood on this boat is of exceptional quality and much of it is oversized, for instance the companionway ladder, that would normally be made of 3/4" mahogany is made of 5/4" instead.

Alyria was on the hard for a few years for a refit that finished up in June of 2023. When relaunched she did not leak at all.

Dimensions

Alyria is currently unpowered but has room for an engine to be installed.
