Description
An aluminum yacht built by Royal Huisman and designed by Sparkman and Stephens for the Admiral's Cup
Huisman 42 for takeover
Awater was designed in 1972 by Sparkman & Stephens (USA)
and built in 1973 by Royal Huisman Shipyard (NL).
This was commissioned by Mr. T.C. Chadwick, a tea merchant living in Great Britain. The ship was fitted out by Souters Marine in Cowes, Isle of Wight, the center of the British sailing world.
Awater is an exceptional sailing yacht with a rich history, built for speed and with an eye for perfection. This makes her a unique collector's item and an extremely capable ocean sailor.
The Awater is the result of the most beautiful collaboration in yacht building.
This special one-off racer was designed by Sparkman & Stephens (USA)
and built by Royal Huisman Shipyard (NL).
A combination that has resulted in a series of unique, irreplaceable,
now classic sailing ships during the period 1965/1980.
Fast, stylish, safe, and efficient. Ships that were considered the absolute top and avant-garde in the sailing world at their time worldwide.
And class is not dependent on time. These ships will speak for themselves now and in the future.
The one-off racer was built for participation in the Admiral’s Cup.
At that time, the yacht was light green in color and was named
‘Green Highlander II’. Although the ship mainly sailed in The Solent,
it had Tighnabruaich, a small harbor town in Scotland, as its home port on the transom.
Between 1978 and 1980, the yacht was sold to an American. The sailing yacht was owned for about ten years by the New York University Privateers, a part of the prestigious New York Yacht Club. It is likely that the ship was renamed Privateer at that time.
In 1996, American businessman Mr. Paul Callahan (Boston) took possession of the yacht.
In 2004, Privateer was purchased in America by Simon de Jong.
That same year, the sailing yacht was brought to Cherbourg by dock ship 'Super Servant 4'.
In this French port town, it was renamed and christened
‘Awater’ by the French virgin Jennifer LeMaître on July 15, 2004, at 3:15 PM. Awater is named after one of the most important poems in Dutch literature.
Via the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight, and Belgium,
it was sailed to the Netherlands by sailor Frans van der Wel and the current owner. The Huisman 42 is back in the country of origin.
In 2004-2005, the ship underwent a complete and intensive restoration at Boenders and Yagra in Hellevoetsluis. The result is a maintained, authentic, and seaworthy yacht that has splendidly withstood the test of time.
Awater is more than a sailing yacht; it is a sailing history with a future for a sailor who knows how to appreciate character, class, and performance.
