The new Simrad HD52 VHF handheld radio is the first to incorporate a distress signal function. The GPS position is fed to the radio through the charging unit while the radio is on charge. This is achieved by connecting the charging unit to a chartplotter or other GPS source using a standard NMEA interface. From this connection the VHF is continuously and automatically uploaded with the current position. When the distress button is activated this will be transmitted alongside the distress signal and boat identification number. The position is updated and stored in the VHF each time the radio is placed in the charger.

A spring loaded cover protects the distress button on the radio from accidental activation. The HD52 is fitted with a 1200 mAh battery, which provides exceptionally long talk and stand by time.

If you have ever struggled with the fiddly little buttons of some handheld VHF radios, the control of the HD52 will come as a revelation. Even in the bitter cold with gloved hands, you can easily press the buttons you want without inadvertently pressing any-thing else. Operation is simple, logical and intuitive, with clear LCD screen graphics to indicate the selected channel and operating mode.

Designed in accordance with the GMDSS maritime safety regulations, the HD52 will withstand being dropped from a height of 1 meter onto a hard surface. The rubber encased flexible aerial is stud mounted for maximum durability, and all the controls are push-button keys, so there are no projections that might be vulnerable to knocks.

The GMDSS rules also require handheld VHF radios to be sufficiently waterproof to cope with use in a liferaft. The casing and controls of the HD52 are fully sealed, to make the radio not just weatherproof, but sufficiently watertight that it can be immersed to 1 meter without coming to any harm.

In addition to the maximum 5 Watt transmission power, for short distance calls in harbors and marinas, there is a low power 1 Watt setting to preserve battery life. Included as standard are a high capacity 1200mAh rechargeable battery and 12V DC charger. An optional rapid charger is also available.

The HD52 features 54 international channels, plus up to 16 additional channels used for particular country requirements and for commercial users.
