VENTURA, Calif. — On newsstands in early July, Powerboat's sixth annual Speed and Technology issue will be the biggest in the magazine's history. The speed-themed August issue has become the most popular of the issue of the magazine, which is published 11 times a year.

"This has been a strong year overall for Powerboat's editorial," said Brett Becker, editor of the magazine. "We've had a number substantial articles like Art of Design boat-painting story, the Bob Leach and Randy Scism profiles and the diesel-engine roundup. But the Speed and Technology issue always is my favorite, and this one is particularly strong."

The 140-page issue features Powerboat's annual 100-mph performance-boat roundup. The average top speed of for this year's fleet was an astounding 125-plus mph. Showcased in the roundup are models from Advantage, Dave's Custom Boats, Douglas Marine/Skater, Eliminator, E-Ticket, Force, Formula, Fountain, Howard, Lavey Craft, Magic, Nordic and Spectre. The fastest boat in the fleet, the 46'Skater ran more than 162 mph.

Following tradition, the August issue includes an "anatomy" feature/pull-out poster. This time around, the featured boat is a 5,000-hp, turbine-powered 48' Tencara catamaran. Called Callan Marine, the repowered and reborn cat, which for several years raced on the European offshore circuit as Jolly Motor with Lamborgini V-12 engines, reportedly has run 209 mph.

In another exclusive feature, the magazine gives readers an in-depth look—and a hands-on test—of the first and only Formula 382 FAS3Tech to be equipped with Arneson surface drives. Tested in San Francisco Bay, the stepped V-bottom, fully equipped 38-footer easily topped 100 mph.

Powerboat also takes readers for a driving lesson in the Reliable Carriers offshore racing catamaran in an article called "Less is More." Providing the lesson is throttling master Jerry Gilbreath, who is teaming up with Tom Abrams, owner of the cat, for the team's second season.

Additional highlights include a look at the newly beefed up Bravo XR drive in Power & Propulsion and a candid conversation with would-be water-speed record-holder Russ Wicks in Timeout With.
