Starlink Maritime by SpaceX is bringing high-speed satellite internet to oceans across the globe. The launch of the maritime service represents a speedy evolution from SpaceX’s Starlink, which has revolutionized access to information in remote and rural areas. Starlink Maritime offers the same high-speed, low-latency broadband internet. Soon, its subscribers will have full connectivity with up to 350 Mbps download speed, even on the planet's most isolated waterways.

Right now, you can get Starlink Maritime coverage in the waters bordering North America and parts of South America, plus much of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Late 2022 will bring massive increases in coverage, with full worldwide coverage expected to follow in early 2023. You can view a map of current and upcoming coverage here.

The release of Starlink Maritime correlates with a ruling by the Federal Communications Commission that granted SpaceX approval to bring satellite internet to moving vehicles. According to Starlink, Starlink Maritime comes with "end-to-end encryption to protect (your) data and confidentially of user traffic," great news for remote workers. The service also allows users to remotely monitor their Starlink vessels.

As most boaters know, it's not all smooth waters and sunshine. Fear not — Starlink Maritime is built with thick skin, capable of enduring extreme temperatures and weather conditions, even rocket engines. Yes, SpaceX uses the service to capture videos of rocket landings.

Starlink Maritime internet is suitable for all different kinds of commercial and personal vessels. The hardware is relatively simple to install. Just attach the two high-performance terminals to the part of your deck with an uninterrupted view of the sky. The Starlink app will also pinpoint the best location to position the mount. Even better, the app alerts boaters of possible blockage zones.

Though it's still early, Starlink Maritime has the potential to drastically alter the landscape of the marine industry and expand the boating community. As coverage grows, life on the water may become more realistic for many. Having instant access to information will likely ease the anxieties of long-haul journeys. Many boaters will also appreciate the option to stay connected with loved ones while traversing faraway seas. Plus, with more virtual employees adopting a nomadic lifestyle, remote workers could see Starlink Maritime as an opportunity to travel and work from oceans across the globe.

Right now, Starlink Maritime will set you back $5,000 a month, plus $10,000 for a one-time hardware cost. What do you think — is Starlink Maritime worth the investment? Follow @boatsdotcom on Instagram to join the conversation.
