FOND DU LAC, Wis. — WHM Motorsports, a 40-foot Skater catamaran powered by twin 750-horsepower. Mercury Racing Super Cat engines won the Super Cat race at the seventh annual Allen Samuels Chevrolet East-West Powerboat Shoot-Out in Corpus Christi, Texas, Sunday, June 4. The win for WHM Motorsports pilots Billy Mauff and Joey Imprescia was overshadowed by the tragic death of veteran powerboat racer Jack Carmody, who was fatally injured after his 42-foot Super Cat raceboat Xtreme Carlos 'N Charlie's flipped on the ninth lap.

The boat flipped backward then skidded on its side. Carmody, 43, was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. of massive head and neck injuries. Carmody and teammate Dan Jackson were coming off their first career Super Cat victory at last month's Hooter's Offshore Grand Prix in Ft. Myers Beach, Fla. Jackson received only minor injuries. The race was stopped after the crash.

Running first at the time accident, WHM Motorsports was awarded the Super Cat class victory. The boats had completed eight of the 16 required laps when the race was called. Cat Can Do finished second Team Yahoo took third.

Super V

Znetix/Lake Cumberland, a 39-foot Fountain V-bottom hull powered by twin 750- horsepower Mercury Racing Super V race engines won the Super V class race with The Muscle finishing a close second. The Muscle' and Znetix/Lake Cumberland exchanged lead positions several times throughout the event before Znetix was eventually able to lock up first place. The boat was throttled by Jeff Harris of of Greenville, N.C., and Wyatt Fountain of Grimesland, N.C. The Shock Wave boat finished third.

Factory 1 and 2

MCS Activator, a 26-foot Activator V-bottom piloted by BJ Maher and Mark
Schnepf won the Factory 1 race event. The team completed the race in 52:18,
averaging 62.45 mph. Team Virgin won the Factory II race.

Offshore Grand Prix June 30-July 1 in Sarasota, Fla.
