Pontoon boat sales are still strong in the post-pandemic world and as these boats have grown bigger and faster, they’ve also become expensive with some speed demons going for as much as $300,000. But that’s where BRP’s Sea-Doo Switch broke all barriers in 2021 with the introduction of their Switch pontoon/PWC crossover which won awards and dropped jaws as boaters lined up to snap one up. Three years later, you can still get out on the water starting at just under $24,000 or you can opt for the new Cruise Limited version that offers serious upmarket features.

Overview

The Switch is still offered in three basic models including the Switch Base, the Switch Sport for watersports, and the Switch Cruise. However, since 65% of boaters opted for the Cruise version, BRP decided to offer a Limited edition to serve customers looking for a little more.

The construction of the boats is still unique. Unlike aluminum pontoon boats, the Switch is a tritoon with three Polytec tubes filled with foam for extra buoyancy. Instead of aluminum fencing panels, there are clear vinyl sides attached to powder-coated railing. This makes the construction lighter and lets the driver see through the vinyl when docking. The center hull is seven inches deeper and narrower and holds the Rotax jet engine and the fuel tank.

Cruise Limited Details

The base Switch models start at 13 feet and reach up to 21 feet. They run roughly $24,000 to $33,000 depending on length, engine size and options. The newly added Switch Cruise Limited carries up to 10 passengers and is only available in the longest length of 21 feet. It carries the largest engine, a 1630 Rotax 230-hp jet motor, and is only available in Caribbean Blue with special trim, badging, floor materials and seating.

The flagship has a 10.25-inch glass helm that integrates the onboard technology and a 7-inch Garmin GPS. The signature handlebar steering system (borrowed from Sea-Do PWCs) is adjustable and can be lowered or raised so you can steer from a seated or standing position while leaning on the flip-up seat bolster. This new captain’s chair has folding arm rests as well a sliding pedestal to accommodate drivers of different sizes.

Familiar features are still here including Sea-Doo’s Intelligent Brake & Reverse (iBR) system that helps you stop, reverse and spin the boat almost in its own length. There’s also cruise control so the driver doesn’t have to apply throttle pressure throughout a long cruise and connectivity with the BRP Go! app. Sea-Doo’s award-winning LinQ system uses snap-in mounting hardware to add seats, corner tables, and coolers so you can configure your boat any way you wish depending on how you’ll use it that day.

A full beam aft swim platform has been added which makes it easier to board the boat and lets you attach more gear via the LinQ system including additional fuel caddies or storage bins. Integrated line storage on the starboard side now makes it easy to tie up and three JLA audio corner “tables” with speakers are standard on this topnotch model. Also standard, is the lighting package which includes LED docking lights and color courtesy lighting under the furniture which adds a boat load of ambience. Posh upholstery sets this model apart with cool weave fabric that reflects sunlight to minimize heat so you don’t burn your buns.

We tested the 230-hp engine on the Cruise model with four people aboard and managed a top speed of 32 mph. Expect cruising speeds of 20-30 mph depending on load and water conditions. This model can do light coastal work, but it’s really designed for protected waters like lakes, rivers and bays. The range will depend on speed and load but the 29-gallon fuel tank is plenty for a whole day of fun. With a draft of under two feet, there aren’t too many places you can’t go, and you’ll never have to worry about dinging an outboard prop with this jet propulsion system.

Pricing

There are lots of ways to personalize a Switch tritoon and although the Cruise Limited has a long list of standard features, you can still add accessories to make it your own. Add rail-mounted cup holders, wakeboard racks, a Bimini for shade or a ski pylon and rearview mirror for tow sports. You can expect to pay more for any flagship and the Cruise Limited is no exception. However, the starting price of $51,000 is still a bargain compared to other pontoon brands and will deliver the same on-the-water enjoyment.

A True Family Boat

Fun, fast, flexible and now quite posh, the Switch Cruise Limited is a family boat that can take you fishing in the morning, wakeboarding in the afternoon, and on a cocktail cruise in the evening. The versatility is exceptional and now you can show off a fully decked out version that will make people at the yacht club look twice.
