VG-41XS: A New Breed
Van Gorkum Yacht Design's new VG-41XS
Drawing on their experience for designing high performance offshore racing yachts, Van Gorkom Yacht Design is presently working on a new breed of monohull keelboat optimized to the recently developed Tranpac 40/50 Rules.
The VG-41XS will be a serious competitor in the 40 footer division with a quick streamline canoe body and a fine entry forward for a strong windward ability. The powerful after sections ensure a dominating planing performance in long Pacific Ocean swells.
The runnerless, fractional rig is carbon fiber with 20° swept back spreaders.
The cockpit is long and open with a single competition carbon wheel, through-the-boom mainsail sheeting, and a non-overlapping jib. The keel is our state-of-the-art, high-lift foil and bulb configuration, contributing to a remarkably stable and well-balanced boat.
Below decks is a functional and well laid out interior attuned to offshore sailing. Integral water ballast tanks give this design a full range of stability and further add to the versatility and dynamics of the boat. This system would allow the owner to race offshore with reduced crew numbers, or to sail around the cans fully crewed and without water ballast.
The construction of the post-cured hull and deck structure consists of a vacuum-bagged, wet-preg s-glass and kevlar laminate over a foam core using an epoxy resin. Carbon fiber is used selectively in areas of high loadings such as stringers, frames, and chainplates. The rudder blade and stock are all carbon.
