Boats We Love? Quadrofoil
Bird? Plane? Quadrofoil.
November 23, 2014
Ever wanted a sports car for the water—one that flies too? Then take a look at the Quadrofoil. It’s a flying personal watercraft with classy design that looks like it comes straight out of a James Bond film.
The folks at Quadrofoil must have been watching America’s Cup sailors or foiling Phantom riders having all the fun, and decided they want to join the party. It certainly looks like a blast.
Power is supplied by an electric outboard that pushes it up to 21 knots, with a range of 54 nautical miles.
With the foils extending in a C shape under the central body, it looks like a very fast mechanical spider. It also looks more fragile than your standard jet ski, so I would avoid running into your friends or up on the beach. But if you do, the foils are designed to rotate to absorb the collision force.
On the downside, they seem to have run out of design budget before finishing the bow.
But I would be the first to sign up for a ride. This craft is a great idea for lakes, rivers and wherever personal watercraft are prohibited. Thanks to the electric power, it doesn’t have the annoying PWC whining and whomping noise that brings those angry looks from beachgoers or neighbors.
Pricing starts at €15,000 (around $18,800) for the base model. If you need GPS, depth meter, navigation lights, fake leather seats and a bigger engine, you’ll have to pony up €22,500 (around $27,500) for the limited edition. The first series is due to be shipped in March 2015.
Check back tomorrow for a cool video of this thing running.
