Mi Sueno aft deck


How’s this for an alfresco seating area? This is the aft deck aboard the 190-foot (58-meter) superyacht Mi Sueño, which I toured during a recent open house hosted by Trinity Yachts and International Yacht Collection. Note how large it is and particularly how it’s elevated.


It’s actually a neat trick that accomplishes a few things. First, it lends the sensation of being in an alfresco room; it’s anything but a carved-out corner of the aft deck. Second, it provides a clear — and clearly delineated — walk-around area for the crew to come and go, attend to lines, and generally do their jobs, all without interference or feeling as if they’re disrupting someone’s afternoon. Last, it’s the clever way of ensuring there’s enough room in the tender garage below for the overhead crane system.


Spatial sleight of hand is nothing new in the megayacht business, but it’s something rarely capitalized on in a handful of ways like this.

There’s another great example of sly spatial relations just inside the aft-deck doors of Mi Sueño. The owners asked designer Patrick Knowles to fashion a truly usable space, instead of leaving the entrance as a wasted aft corner of the saloon. You’re looking at the result: a wine-tasting lounge (not yet loaded with 400+ bottles), which can become its own intimate room by drawing the floor-to-ceiling curtains at the edge of the saloon just forward. The custom, full-height wine cabinets to each side, atop cigar humidors, accomplish another neat trick: concealing the air trunks, which exhaust up on the top deck.
