CoolCharger Power Boost
The CoolCharger from Livorsi Marine delivers added horsepower.
July 23, 2001
As anyone in the high-performance marine world can tell you, it takes power to make speed. Remarkably efficient as catamarans and stepped V-bottoms are, there comes a time when nothing short of more horsepower will get the speed job done. That's where superchargers and centrifugal blowers, such as the CoolCharger from Livorsi Marine, enter the performance picture.
Designed for use on MerCruiser 502 (415 horsepower) and 454 (385 horsepower) Magnum MPI engines, the CoolCharger develops a mild 5.25 psi boost. That translates to less wear on internal components than that created by higher-boost blowers. The unit also incorporates ceramics bearings. For this reason, according to product literature, the CoolCharger requires neither an intercooler nor internal lubrication via an oil feed. Installation of the blower requires no additional oil lines.
An electronic control module manages air/fuel and ignition calibration. The manufacturer reports that CoolCharger makes its peak torque — approximately 642 foot-pounds?from 4,100 to 4,300 rpm installed on a 502 Magnum MPI, which is well within the operating range of the engine. That should translate to significant gains in low- and mid-range acceleration.
According to the manufacturer, the system can be installed in five hours. In addition to the blower, the kit comes with laser-cut anodized brackets, air ducting, the ECM, a high-volume fuel pump, air filters, belts and pulleys and all necessary connectors.
Something to be aware of before you buy: Installation of any aftermarket blower automatically voids the warranty of any MerCruiser of Mercury Racing engine.
