Sea Winner 42: IMS 600 Preview

Marine Composite approached us to design a new IMS 42 to be series built , in limited numbers, according to the IMS rule version 2004 and IMS 600.

This is an evolution of my previous design Sea Winner 46, designed for the same yard which is based in Italy near San Remo in Andora. We decided to go the bottom of the range of the GPH, allowed to be eligible as IMS 600, so we went to 586 sec/mile GPM. We worked a lot within CFD and VPP analysis on the hull form; we created a long (LOA 12.65 metres) and narrow (Max. Beam 3.25 metres) canoe body with U sections.

The rig supports a large sailplan that enables the boat to be fast in light to medium winds, the normal condition in the Mediterranean sea. The construction is from female moulds for hull and deck using prepreg from SP Systems in E glass and reinforcement in carbon fibre up to achieve a light, strong and durable boat. The appendages were designed with extensive CFD (computer fluid dynamic) testing, to obtain as thick foil as requested by the IMS rule, but with a low drag and high lift . The keel is built with a CNC milling machine from a cast of lead (bottom) and (top) iron.

With a different keel with torpedo in lead and blade in iron of different design , and
with a masthead spinnaker the boat will perfom well also in IRC.

The rudder is characterized by an high aspect ratio with the blade and the stock,
built in carbon fibre pre-preg by ISOTOP in France.

But the Sea Winner 42 is not only a racing boat, it would be good also for cruising,
the interiors will have a cabin height of 1.90 metres, 3 cabins, 1
toilet etc.

The basic cost on the boat complete with mast in carbon fibre will be
lower than a one off boat, but with the same standard of finish.

A real racing machine suitable to be used in cruising for a long term!
