Simrad has become the first company in the world to incorporate the new
Sharp Advanced TFT Transflective screen into its SunView 42 Series
combined Chartplotters, Echosounders and Radars. This new ATFT technology,
which is being shown at the Southampton Boat Show for the first time, will
revolutionize the use of electronic navigation and sports fishing
electronics in areas exposed to bright daylight and direct sunshine.
SunView ATFT screens reflect bright daylight and direct sun, to create an
unmatched crisp presentation in true colour. This ability to provide the
sharpest display in direct sunlight is especially suitable for flybridge
or exposed cockpit applications.
The software used in the 42 series has been developed to provide a number
of new facilities, many of which have previously been only available in
professional marine electronics. The benefits of this software have also
been incorporated into other Simrad navigation products.
The advanced Chart Management system has been incorporated to provide the
optimum presentation of the electronic charts at all times. Whichever
scale is selected, the system will automatically present the most suitable
chart available from the C-Map cartridges. The system will also allow the
user to select the level of detail required on the chart.
A new QuickScale and level lock function has been added to the software
which allows a chart to be presented in the selected scale and related
detail level by a single keystroke on a numeric key. The chart scale can
be changed with the zoom-in and zoom-out keys, while the chart detail
level is locked at the original requirement.
The Advanced Chart Management system ensures that charts change instantly
on screen. A new chart area ahead of the vessel is updated on a separate
level and immediately takes over when the boat passes the centre of the
screen. On the Multifunction Radars, a single keystroke synchronises the
range and orientation of the Radar and chart images. This function also
synchronises the cursors on the Radar display and Chartplotter display to
make it easy to pinpoint and separate unknown targets. As an additional
safety feature, a CBL Cursor Bearing Line has been included which can
display a dotted line from the ships position to a moving target, making
it easy to determine if there is any danger of collision.
A lollipop function has been incorporated into the radar display which
indicates the active waypoint and leg as a line leading to a circle, when
in the route the next leg and waypoint are also indicated, providing the
helmsman additional indication of his future course.
For the sports fisherman, the Chartplotters can now be connected to the
Simrad TL50 Turbo Loader to gain virtually unlimited memory capacity via a
standard floppy disk. The system records tracks, marks, waypoints etc. Up
to five ARPA targets from an external Radar can be tracked on the screen
and saved in the memory.
The new software is prepared for the coming GPS correction systems, WAAS,
EGNOS and MSAS, covering the US, Europe and the Far East. The WAAS system
is currently under test and is due to be functional by 2002 with EGNOS
following in 2003. The receivers for these systems are built into all the
40/50 series and can be upgraded for implementation in fall 2001, making
them fully operational as soon as the correction systems are available.
The new software has provided the 42 series of 10" screen color displays
with an even higher level of functionality. Enhanced colour palette,
selectable day and night chart colours and even a built in navigation demo
programme which allows the user to practice virtual navigation off season,
makes the new Simrad software indispensable to the navigation system of a
vessel.
