Vripack 138 New Generation Explorer

Many people credit Palmer Johnson and Vripack with introducing the concept of expedition yachts to the larger megayacht market, with the delivery of the 151-foot Turmoil in 1996. Since that time, Vripack and several other designers have gone on to produce similarly adventurous-looking craft. Vripack is at it once again, only this time with a relatively new superyacht builder in Turkey: Cizgi Shipyard.

The design above is for Jasmin II, a 138-footer commissioned by a repeat client of the design studio. Vripack calls the look “New Generation Explorer,” reflecting not just the expeditionary styling and purpose, but also an emphasis on more traditional yacht accoutrements. There should be plenty of both, given that Jasmin II will tower five decks high – about 59 feet from the waterline to her highest point, in fact. The 30-foot beam also comes into play.

The owner hired Art-Line Interiors to give him and up to eight guests a home at sea. As you’d expect, the owner’s suite occupies the full beam forward on the main deck. Particularly noteworthy here are the nearly floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic views. Guests will be treated to good vistas on voyages, too, as all four staterooms are on the upper deck.

Judging from photos on Cizgi Shipyard’s Web site, modular construction is being employed. Take a look, and you’ll see the steel hull and mostly aluminum superstructure being brought together. Note I said “mostly” aluminum – the wheelhouse and mast are being made of fiberglass, to help keep weight in control.

Launch is expected in summer 2011, when sea trials are expected to show Jasmin II is capable of a 13-knot top speed.
