Description
A true offshore performance cruiser - proven, practical, and ready to sail the world.
Built by renowned Australian sailor and boatbuilder Serge Testa - still holder of the record for the smallest vessel to circumnavigate the globe - Luar was his final and most refined creation before retirement. A modified Mumby 48 design, she reflects over four decades of Testa's hands-on experience and seafaring insight. Constructed in Brisbane from aluminium, Luar is strong, lightweight, and designed with long-range, low-maintenance cruising in mind.
Purchased as a near-new vessel in 2020 by current owners Braye and Emma, Luar has since proven herself extensively - sailing from Brisbane to Tasmania, the Australian East Coast, remote Indonesian islands, and recently to Langkawi. Her systems have been thoughtfully upgraded for liveaboard life and independent offshore passagemaking.
Key Features & Upgrades
Aluminium Construction - Built for strength, longevity and serious bluewater capability
Modified Mumby Layout - Centralised helm station (not aft), galley-up, open saloon, clean aft cockpit for pure social space - vastly superior to traditional layouts
Twin 39hp Engines - Only ~60 hours at purchase; minimal use since
Raymarine ACU-400 Hydraulic Autopilot - Replacing the standard mechanical system; far more robust and programmable
Dual Profurl Furlers - Headsail and staysail for easy sail handling in boisterous conditions
Schenker Zen 60 Watermaker - Ultra-efficient mechanical system with minimal power draw - easily run from solar
Eberspacher Diesel Hydronic Heater - Three fan radiators (saloon and both hulls) for high-latitude cruising comfort
Highfield 4.2m RIB & 25hp Outboard - Alloy beach wheels, chaps, and big power for true exploration
Custom FRP Stern Grating & New Aft Sun Awning
Cockpit Upholstery & Additional Comfort Features
Voyaging Pedigree..
Since launch, Luar has logged thousands of bluewater miles, from the Tasman Sea to the Timor Sea and deep into the Eastern and Southern Indonesian archipelagos. She's not a marina-bound showpiece - she's a proven global cruiser, meticulously maintained and continuously improved. In August 2025, she made a direct passage from Lombok to Langkawi via the Java south coast - testament to her performance, comfort and reliability.
Why We're Selling..
As a professional mariner, Braye is now leading the design and build of a 35m aluminium performance sailing catamaran - essentially, Luar scaled up for global expeditions. With construction beginning in 2026, managing two vessels is simply not practical.
Final Thoughts..
If you're looking for a serious, ready-to-go, aluminium cruising catamaran that blends offshore pedigree with practical comfort and intelligent design, Luar is a rare find. She's not just a boat - she's a culmination of decades of experience and adventure, ready to continue her journey with new custodians.
